You heard right. The good ol' boys are calling it quits. And while the Dirty Guv'nahs have endured a life span of just under a decade, their reason for parting from the music world is just as respectable as the way in which they presented it to their fans. Click below to view their bittersweet departure video.
The Dirty Guv'nahs, if you have not been cultured by any of their four roots rock albums, are best known by their love of performing live. This intimate connection to their fans is exactly what fueled their non-stop touring over the past nine years. And ever since the release of their first album in 2009, the Dirty Guv'nahs have exemplified what it has meant not only to be authentic songwriters and live performers, but also genuine self-made guys, in a music industry chock full of auto-tuned jerks.
So then why has the band decided to stop now? First and foremost, the guys wanted to “dispel any rumors that may be created in the aftermath of the announcement" in order to ensure that while their break-up may be sad and shocking to all of us, it has been entirely agreeable among all of them. James, Justin, Aaron, Cozmo, Kevin, and Michael, six friends from Tennessee, have rightfully decided that they are ready to dedicate themselves to other areas of life, like, you know, spending time with their families, having kids, and doing other normal people stuff. In fact, what you probably don't know about the Dirty Guv'nahs, is that they never had any intention of making a career of the band.
In 2006, the guys agreed to come together to play at a local benefit concert in their hometown (seemingly as a joke), but when their native crowd enjoyed their bluesy, folky, rock more than they had expected, the Dirty Guv'nahs found their birth in Knoxville on that very day. They went on to create four albums and tour the nation, making stops at renowned festivals like Bonnaroo and SXSW.
To maintain their honest record, they believed that there was no better way to say goodbye than with a farewell tour for their fans. They're staying close to home, roaming southeastern hotspots like Charlotte, Charleston, Atlanta, Birmingham, Athens, and ending where their hearts will always remain true: Knoxville.
