Once you turn eighteen years old and are in college, you should know what you are going to do with your life… right?
In the fast paced society in which we live, family gatherings and life are plagued by the question asking us what we are going to do with our lives, what we re going to major in…
Everything seems to be connected and the impression is largely that every single decision you make today decides your fate in the end. End all be all.
If you do not know what you are going to do with your life—if you are not sure exactly what you want to major in, it is okay. You have a lot more time than you think you do!
Change your major once. Change your major twice. That is completely alright, I have done that before and it is alright if you do as well. What you major in, in the end, truly does not matter. Obviously if you want to be a doctor, make sure you get all of the proper courses out of the way, but truly major in what you are passionate about. It is important to love what you are learning in school. If not, college becomes a bore. You become unmotivated and ultimately bummed out about yur future career prospects.
No matter what you do, the moral of the story is that it is on you. You decide if you are going to get an A on that next exam. You decide what you pursue. You decide whether or not you are going to be successful! If you do not know what it is that you want to do in order to gain that success quite yet, you have all of college to figure that out. It is designed exactly for that and there are support systems and people you can talk to, to go your options in different fields and to give you ideas on what you might be interested in studying. If you want to study English, go for it. If you want to study biochemistry, go for it. Do what you love, it truly makes the work that you are doing significantly more meaningful which translates directly to both success and a drive to work extra hard.
Every single major is completely valid in its own right. College is hard, and so is every major. Majoring in physics is by no means more “valid” or “legit” than an English major despite what people say. They are different modes of thought designed for different purposes, and they are both just as difficult as the other in their own right. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise, as that will only drive you towards careers that you are not happy in, and a life that you are not as pleased with. While yes, that seems like it is concluding a lot from a mere major, still remember that your major is not the end all be all for your life. It is you who ultimately chooses your path even after you graduate and that is the moral of the story.
You are in college to get an education. No matter what you major in, you are obtaining skills that apply to many different fields that will serve you well in life and many fields.
Do what you love!
