With the Olympics already underway in Rio, there are many inspiring stories of athletes. Here's a list of a few.
1. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Refugee team
The IOC chose this group of 10 athletes to compete. The team consists of refugees from Syria, Belgium, South Sudan, Ethiopia and the Congo. There are two swimmers, six runners (who run various distances) and two athletes who compete in Judo. An example of one of these athletes is Yusra Mardini. She is a swimmer from Damascus in Syria. She fled with her family. The boat they were on began to fail and she swam at sea for three hours and pushed the boat to land. She and her sisters saved 20 people.
2. Oksana Chusovitina
Oksana is a 41 year old gymnast from Uzbekistan. The oldest gymnast I the Olympics this year. She is competing for her son who has cancer. She has competed in the Barcelona, London and Rio games. She can fly really high on vault.
3. The US Women's Soccer Team
After their incredible World Cup win last year they are following it up with a trip to Rio. Currently, last night to be exact, they had a 2-2 draw game against Croatia. But, they are still moving on in their group (group G). My favorite player is Carli Lloyd. She is from Southern New Jersey like me. I believe that you will win a gold medal!! Let's go girls!
4. Katie Ledecky
An incredible 19 year old swimmer for the USA! She has won two gold medals already in these games. She is so fast! Go Katie!
5. Ibthihaj Muhammad
She is a 30 year old American fencer. The first American woman to wear a hijab at the Olympics.
6. Micheal Phelps
The greatest athlete of all time, or in the sport of swimming at least. A childhood crush of mine and her has the cutest son ever! Has 21 Olympic medals and 18 of them are gold. Go Mike!
Those are just a few athletes to mention. There are so many more inspiring athletes competing in the Paralympics and Olympic Games this summer and I'm sure you can agree with that statement. Good luck to all.
