Everything My Older Sister Taught Me That My Younger Sister Needs to Know

We might not always talk, but were stuck together.

Just because we’re not related by blood, doesn’t mean my older sister didn’t have an upper hand in the person I’ve become. I’m really lucky to have grown up in a blended family. I was given an older sister who taught me things that I can now pass on to my younger sister. Blood doesn’t exactly make you family, loving on another makes you family.

My little sister is on her way to graduate high school, and my older sister and I are graduating college this year. I’ve learned a lot in the last few years. I owe it to my late night phone calls or pizza dates with my sister. Sometimes you can only learn things from you sister. Your parents can try and try to tell you over and over again, but you don’t believe them because they’re your parents. Sisters have a bond that is stronger than any other one. We’ve over come fights together, we’ve over come so much change, we transitioned in to each stage of life together, and we’ve been walking our paths of life with onanother a lot longer than other people have with us.

So these are the things my older sister taught me that I want my little sister to know:

Be kind.

You’re going to meet so many people youdon’t like, but you need to over come that. Being kind is going to get you a lot farther in life that being rude.

Don’t give up.

Things are going to be hard, that doesn’t mean you should quit. Keep striving to make to get where you need to be in life to be successful.

Breathe.

You’re going to want to cry a lot while you’re figuring out what you want to do with your life. Keep breathing and telling yourself you’re going to over come it.

Be creative.

Don’t lose your creativity. You’re such a bright girl. Always stay that way. Take an art class, or pottery class now and then. Make yourself show your creativity. Especially when you’re afraid you’re losing it.

Don’t be afraid to relive your memories.

Some of the best times in the world are sitting with your sister in a car for four hours listening to Jesse McCartney and Dream Street. It makes you appreciate your past and relive your times together.

Your heart is going to be broken.

We’re always going to be there to pick up the pieces.

Pizza is your soulmate.

Enough said. Don’t be afraid to enjoy food.

Work hard.

The things you earn yourself are the best things you can possibly receive. You appreciate it more.

Your family will always come first.

Friends come and go, but your sisters will always be there. We have no choice.

We will answer your 4 am phone calls.

We might be annoyed but we love you.

Don’t trust easily.

Don’t let others know what can ruin you in the long run.

Enjoy life.

Don’t pass up any opportunity that comes your way.

Love a little deeper.

Love as hard as you can, because even if it doesn’t work out, we are always going to be here to pick you up.

Follow your dreams.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t, because you can. You can do anything in the world that you set your mind to.

And last, stay fierce little one.

Don’t ever lose your sass, it’s who you are. It will insure that no one walks all over you. It will separate you from everyone else. It will be what drives you. It will help you overcome your challenges.

I try every day to make my older sister proud. I know that my little sister makes me proud every single day. You’ll want us to be wrong sometimes, but we teach you the things we do because we love you. I could never ask for better best friends than my sisters. We might not all be related by blood, but I was blessed with two of the best sisters in the entire world. I could never thank them enough for everything they give me every single day.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
