What My Older Siblings Have Taught Me

Reasons the youngest child has to thank their older siblings.

What My Older Siblings Have Taught Me

Being the youngest sibling of the family can be hard at times. You have many pressures to be the best combination of your older siblings, all while being your own person and making your own choices. But what some older brothers and sisters may not have known is that your youngest sibling is grateful for all of your ups and downs that you share with them. They are able to learn from the mistakes of others… without all of the consequences.

Follow your heart

As cliché as it is, it’s true. Each of my siblings followed their hearts and passions. If I were to ask each of them on a scale of one to 10 what they would rate their lives thus far, they would say 10.

Be bada** in whatever you do.

My family is pretty awesome. Each of them are amazing in their respective fields. If you want to succeed, be good at what you do, and do it with the best attitude you have.

Kick any boyfriend/girlfriend that treats you bad to the curb, even if there is a possibility that you are ‘in love with him/her.’

Sadly, my siblings have gone through many heartbreaks. From what I gather, it is best to kick them to the curb if it gets a little sketchy. From what I have seen in all of their love lives, they have found better, more genuine people to spend their lives with.

Always carry your keys in your hand.

Getting locked out is never fun, but keys can have many uses. Knowing self-defense is good whenever in sketchy situations. But for everyone else that didn’t take karate as a child, it can be scary out there. Just put your key in between your pointer and middle finger in case you need to fend any unwanted characters away.

Find a way to stand out, even if it means making a complete fool of yourself.

There is nothing worse than being the ‘third-wheel.’ Make yourself stand out by doing or saying what everyone is thinking. Stand out and be noticed to make a lasting impression, but make sure it is a good one.

Be confident in who you are, even during the moments you make a complete fool of yourself.

Confidence is key in any situation. You walk into the wrong room, turn around like a boss and get out of there before the people notice you actually had no clue where you were going.

Be book-smart as well as street-smart.

You need to be able to hold your own during a test, but also when finding your way around a city or new area. Both are needed in the game of life.

Through the hardest of times, I have four people I know will stick up for me.

We may not all be the closest, but I know that if anyone does me harm or wrong, they have my back to put the person in their place.

How to hold your own when debating, while respecting other ideas.

Each of us have our own opinions on different topics. Sometimes we agree, but not always. Because of them, I am not afraid to speak my mind and try to win every debate I have with them.

Be versatile when talking with different people.

I’m not saying change your personality between each person, just know who you are talking to and what they are interested in. They will do this with you as well. This way, you can have the best relationships possible.

Getting hit in the head with a plunger is just as disgusting as it sounds

This has actually happened. No joke. It was disgusting and I don’t want to talk about it.

Do something every day that scares you.

Each of my siblings has done things that have scared them. I have learned that they learn a lot about themselves and about the world. Doing something that scares them has helped them grow and discover the things they love most about life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
