New York City is certainly known for having some of the best restaurants and bakeries in the country. Here are five old-school bakeries with some of the best donuts, pastries, cakes, and cookies you can find:

1. Peter Pan Donuts and Pastry Shop

Located at 727 Manhattan Avenue in Brooklyn, NY, Peter Pan Donuts and Pastry Shop has been there for over 60 years and has some of the best donuts you can find in New York City. There are more than twenty varieties of donuts including classics like vanilla frosted, chocolate frosted, glazed, jelly-filled, and crème filled to new varieties like s’mores, pumpkin, red velvet, and toasted coconut. You can even get an ice cream filled donut! They also have various other pastries like crullers, cinnamon buns, muffins, éclairs, and bagels to name a few.

2. Fortunato Brothers Café

Not far from Peter Pan Donuts, Fortunato Brothers Café is located at 289 Manhattan Ave in Brooklyn, NY. Fortunato Brothers is your typical, old-school Italian café, where you can get a cappuccino while enjoying your freshly made dessert. They have tons of variations in desserts including gelato, cannolis (my personal favorite), cream puffs, napoleons, cakes, chocolates, and different cookies and pastries. The pink, heart-shaped cookies are also worth trying!

3. Glaser’s Bake Shop

In business since 1902, Glaser’s Bake Shop, located at 1670 First Avenue (At 87th Street) in Manhattan, has been an upper-east side staple. They make everything from donuts, muffins, turnovers, cookies to breads, sticky buns, pies, pastries, and cakes. However, many people claim that Glaser’s has the best black and white and kitchen sink cookies in NYC!

4. Ferrara Bakery

Located in the heart of Little Italy, Ferrara bakery has been in business since 1892! The bakery has a seating area and offers various of desserts including simple pastries, fruits, gelato, and cakes. Ferrara also serves brunch and wine.

5. Veniero’s

Since 1894, Veniero’s has been serving baked goods at 342 E. 11th St. (Between 1st & 2nd Avenues) in Manhattan. Veniero’s serves all of the classics including great cheesecakes, strawberry shortcakes, and tiramisu. Like all other old-school bakeries, Veniero’s also serves various pastries and classic Italian cookies!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
