We've all had those moments where we've witnessed something that another person did that was astonishingly inconsiderate. Or something that was just straight up bizarre. Any college student can share loads of stories of weird things that have happened on their campus. Everyone gets it. It's practically normal.
But then there are those times where people do things that just make you go, "Okay, seriously? Is this actually happening right now?" We get it. Not everyone is going to be polite 100 percent of the time. But there are just some things that are not acceptable. Here is a list of things other Southeast students are begging other to stop doing.
10. Littering.
There have been students posting online all school year about how much trash is strewn across campus. Not only is there trash outside on the sidewalks and in the grass, but also on shuttles, in classrooms and buildings in general. We've been taught since we were allowed to take naps in class about how littering is bad. It's common sense. If we're paying so much to go to school, the least we can do is take care of our campus.
9. Talking when the professor is talking.
This is another one of those things that is just plain common sense. It's not only disrespectful to the professor while you're talking, but it makes it so much more difficult for students to focus when there's background noise like not-so-subtle whispers. If you don't want to learn, fine. But it is not okay to take that away from the others that attended class.
8. Taking another person's seat.
Yes, we are no longer in high school where assigned seats are actually a thing. But, we are well into the semester where everyone has their set seat in class. We've been sitting in the same spot all semester because we chose that spot for some reason. So please keep in your own seat, or move a desk that is normally not occupied by another fellow classmate.
7. Walking too slow.
When students are walking on narrow pathways such as the sidewalk or in a hallway in one of the academic buildings, walking slow causes a lot of traffic and creates issues for other students who have a time crunch to get to their next class. Nobody's asking you to power walk everywhere even though it's good exercise. Just please be aware of your surroundings when traveling across campus.
6. Cutting in line.
From the Chick-fil-a line at the University Center to the massive lines at Subway, cutting in line is an age-old low blow type of move. Just because your friends are in line ahead of you doesn't give you a right to cut in front of everyone else to get your food before the ones that have already been there forever. Nobody gets special treatment for any reason. Nobody on campus is better than all others. You can wait like everyone else has to.
5. Not holding the elevator doors for others.
We've all witnessed those people that struggle to get their keys to turn the doors that lead to the separate dorm buildings. This is especially true for the elevator rooms because a lot of those doors are quite heavy. I don't know how many times I've witnessed someone get on the elevator while I was struggling with my key, made eye contact with me, and closed the elevator door right as I finally push my way into the room. We know you've got to rush because you've got a super hot date with your bed and television, but waiting the extra ten seconds to let someone on the elevator will not kill you.
4. Not waiting for others to get off the shuttle.
Again, we've been well enough into the year where if you ride the shuttle bus on a regular basis, you should know the drill by now. The shuttle stops, and you wait for everyone who is getting off on that stop to actually get off before hopping on the bus. It is a simple procedure that is not only polite, but prevents a lot of clustering and shoving when others are trying to get off.
3. Forgetting room keys.
Okay, this is something most of us have done at one time or another. Yes. It happens. But everyone should know by now to make it a point that they've remembered their keys before leaving the floor. It is not the job of the person whose room is closest to the lobby to let you in at all hours of the day because you're too lazy to grab your keys. And it's not okay to always be the person to knock continuously for several minutes non-stop until someone finally lets you in. Your keys and your access are your responsibility.
2. Not taking care of personal hygiene.
Believe it or not, this is actually a huge problem for those that live in dorms on campus. In the few years that I've been living on campus, my floor mates and I have had issues with people that don't ever flush after using the bathroom, leave large clumps of hair in the shower, and not cleaning up other bodily fluids. And this goes for both men and women. Everyone who lives in dorms is forced to share bathrooms and showers with someone, and it's just unfair to force others to deal with those nasty conditions because you can't properly care for yourself.
1. Walking around without headphones.
I don't know when or how this actually became an issue, but now there are a lot of people that like to walk around campus and inside other buildings just blaring music from their phones, no headphones or anything. I've actually been stuck in an elevator with a guy who was blaring obscene music to the loudest setting. It's the same issue where people who use headphones blare their music so loud it's as if they're not wearing any. Why do you feel so entitled that everyone has to listen to your music? No. Nobody should be forced to do that. Be a decent human being and keep your music to yourself.
A lot of these habits are largely thanks to lack of common sense. This worries me because we are all adults that are so close to entering the real world. People, please be considerate of others and make yourselves aware that common sense will help you succeed in life.
