Being a single girl in college can be overwhelming sometimes because it seems like people are constantly putting pressure on you to date. But honestly, I am happy being alone. This is the perfect time for us to figure things out without worrying about throwing ourselves into a relationship just for the heck of it. This is my time to be free. In the grand scheme of things, I have the rest of my life to find my "soulmate." Here are a few justifiable reasons why you should be happy you're single right now.

Focus on yourself

College is actually one of the most confusing times of your life so it's important to focus on yourself. Spend this time trying to find yourself instead of trying to find "your person."

Don't have to answer to anyone

This is so important. You have so many opportunities and adventures ahead of you, it's nice to be able to jump up and do anything you want without having to run it by someone else first.

Being independent

Going away to college is one of the first times most people get to experience independence. It's such a good feeling to be able to do things on your own and find things you're good at. Don't let someone try to control that or stop you from doing your own thing.

Spending time with friends

This should be a given regardless of if you're single or not but some people tend to forget about their friends once they find a significant other. You meet so many special people in college so you should try to spend as much time with them as you can, while you can.

Having close friends of the opposite sex

It's easy to get jealous if your boyfriend or girlfriend spends time with people of the opposite sex but you can't help it if you have close friends. You should be able to enjoy your friend's company, no matter who they are. It's important to meet people and have connections during this period of your life.

You can be selfish

It's OK to BE SELFISH sometimes!! Do things that make you happy. Focus on things you want to do and get it done, don't let anyone hold you back from that. This is the perfect time to throw yourself into sports, greek life, or anything else that sparks your interest. (Before you have kids and get married.)

You can be a flirt

A little flirting never hurts anyone. You can talk to who you want, how you want without feeling guilty!

You can go to parties whenever you want

If you want to go out every day of the week, so be it. You have the freedom to go out with different friends whenever you want and it's not a problem. The point is if you feel like you want to be a little wild sometimes, go for it!

Less regrets when you look back

When you look back on your college years, you will have so many great memories with your friends instead of on and off relationships or failed ones. You never know how something will turn out but it's better to live your life and experience as much as you can without regretting how something turned out.

You can actually focus on your studies

This is obviously the most important but it's easy to forget your priorities when you constantly have someone in the way. Try to focus on school first before anything else because that's the main reason you're there (even though all the other things are more fun!)

Being on my own, I have discovered so many things about myself throughout my college experiences. You have to remember that not only is it OK to be single, but this is the best time to be single!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
