Freshman Year Advice
Jenny Davis

School starts soon. For many of the upper classmen at SWU we look forward to going back and seeing all of our friends. However, the freshman don't have that luckiness that we have. But we have this wonderful opportunity to share with all the freshman, one way or another at SWU. However, before you get here I wanted to give you some advice!

1. Let your parents help you, you can always rearrange it after they leave.

2. Your parents will probably cry, let them.

3. It will be a long weekend, but it is soo worth it.

4. Make friends with the people on your hall.

5. Be friends with the people you meet at all the orientation activities.

6. Find friends that are in your major classes, you will learn that it helps down the road.

7. With your roommate set boundaries and sleep times.

8. Make sure you share your schedule with your roommate, and make sure you know theirs as well.

Your freshman year will only be good as you make it. Going to SWUSA(SWU student activities) events, hanging out in Blue Hill and going on road trips with your friends are always fun. However, just a little side piece of advice:

-- DO your school work!

-- DO make time for showers

-- DO make time for sleep

You always need a little bit of fun in your life, do not hesitate to go on road trips with your best friends. It allows you to destress from school and to have fun. But once you get back on campus, you know it is time to get back to work. However, your freshman year will go by quick so

-- DON'T skip class

-- DON'T slack off, just because you think you know it doesn't mean you actually do.

-- DON'T chase after the opposite gender. They can be distracting from your school work. Honestly, you don't need a guy/girl right now in this phase of life.

To those that think you need a significant other right now, trust me you don't. You can be best friends, you can be each others rock; however, you do not need to be dependent on that person at this time. You need to learn how to be independent in this phase of life. You need to learn that you don't always need that one person, sometimes you can get weighed down because you are trying to please to many people. With school, and other activities, you hardly have any space or alone time as it is. Let go and let God, he will guide you in the correct path.

A major thing to do your freshman year is to realize that God has a plan for you, he might put in your heart that you need to change majors, do it! Don't stay in something that you are not going to enjoy 10 years down the road. You can always go to God in prayer and he will help you, it might not be when you want him to, but He will provide.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
