Why 'Ocean's 8' Is An Important Film To Make In 2018

I think many people are skeptical of Ocean's 8 because of the disappointment we felt after the Ghostbusters reboot didn't succeed as people hoped. Ocean'8, though, is different.

I went and saw Ocean's 8 opening weekend. I had done some googling beforehand, and everything I found said Ocean's 8 was a "comedic spin-off" of the original Ocean's movies with George Clooney.

Growing up, I must have seen the Ocean's movies a dozen times. They're exciting, dazzling, and they would always have me wondering if they would actually get away with it in the end.

I was really excited about this new Ocean's movie. I've missed not knowing how one of their heists will end.

Ocean's 8 follows Danny Ocean's sister, who is played by Sandra Bullock. She has devised a heist needing 7 people, and she wants women, not men, since "men get noticed." As she gathers her team, we meet Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, and others, who are all geniuses in their craft.

There were a lot of points in the movie where I didn't know if they would get away with it. It was just as exciting as I remember.

For me, the movie was even better because it was female dominated. Not only because women only make up 29% of leads in feature films, but because the Ocean's series are within a genre where women are usually only there for eye candy to either distract the hero or distract the person they're stealing from. It also had genuine depictions of women, where they all had their own personalities and reasonings for joining the con.

Also, the film passes the Bechdel test. Not just in one scene, but in practically all of the movie. If you don't know, the Bechdel test looks at films to see if there are scenes where two women speak to one another about something other than a romantic pursuit. All throughout Ocean's 8, there are scenes of the women speaking to one another about getting what they want, whether it be a bar, for Nine-ball, or being able to move out of her parent's house, for Amita.

For me, the description of Ocean's 8 as a "comedic spin-off" is a disservice. Yes, it is a spin-off, since the only mention of the original movies are in Debbie's memories of her brother, Danny. But I think it could also just be a new reboot, like the new Star Wars films. I also don't think Ocean's 8 is a comedy. At least no more so than the Martian is a comedy (Golden Globes, I'm looking at you.) Yes, there were lines that made me laugh, but it wasn't ridiculous. It was a movie that I came out of saying "that was SO funny."

It's witty, it's bold, it's intriguing. It's every reason that I watched the original Ocean's movies. But with some (a lot) of my favorite female actors.

Thank you, Gary Ross, for opening up the world of heists to women. I agree, men get noticed. It's why the original movies were so tense all the time.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
