This weekend marked President Obama's last White House Correspondents' Dinner, also known as the "nerd prom." Obama used this event to poke fun at our government, and of course to take a jab at the presidential election. None of the candidates were safe. "The end of the republic has never looked better," Obama jokingly said during his speech. He used this opportunity to have some fun at the expense of Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and even John Kasich.
One of the main topics in President Obama's monologue was, of course, Donald Trump. The Republican frontrunner has been at the forefront of the media, but was not present at the dinner. Obama was surprised to see that Trump did not make an appearance at the dinner to have a moment in the spotlight. "Is this dinner too tacky for the Donald?" Obama asked jokingly. He questioned if Trump was home eating Trump steaks and sending out mean tweets to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Trump was not the only target in Obama's speech. All of the other candidates were also for Obama. Even John Kasich, who, according to Obama, "isn't polling high enough to qualify for their own joke." Bernie Sanders, the only presidential candidate that was in attendance at the dinner, received some honorable mention from Obama and then went right into taking jabs at Sanders's opponent, Hillary Clinton. "Hillary trying to appeal to young voters is a little bit like your relative who just signed up for Facebook," Obama said when trying to compare Clinton to Sanders's ability to attract millennial voters, in which Sanders is doing much better than Clinton. Obama's full speech can be found on the White House YouTube channel.
This year's White House Correspondents' Dinner was filled with a lot of laughs, but some did find it as a bittersweet moment. This marked another one of President Obama's last events before he has to give up the presidency. He took the ending in stride, though. Obama ended his speech with just two words—"Obama out," an epic mic drop—and many on social media have said that Barack Obama will go down as one of the coolest presidents.
