With the world around us constantly changing, it takes a moment to truly soak in what is going on around us. Some of us are working while others are preparing for yet another year at school. We are moving into tiny apartments with roommates that will be our lifelong friends. But in between the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, there's this thing called "news." We are bombarded by it each and every day. Be it Good Morning America, E! News, Fox, etc., news is a constant flow of "occurrences" in our world, both domestic and abroad.
This past week has been full of trauma and terror, as well as wonderful accomplishments. Here's a look back on this past week's news from pop-culture to foreign affairs and everything (okay, a few things) in between.
Caitlyn Jenner wins the Arthur Ashe Award: It's already been critiqued enough. But the truth is, Caitlyn Jenner won that award for her participation in being an advocate for the transgender community. Good, bad, or other, Caitlyn, being the public figure that she is, can shed some light on issues around this community as a whole.
Chattanooga Shooting: The United States of America lost 4 Marines to what they are calling "an act of terror" at the Navy Operational Support Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This has become a form of national awareness wherein the government and Secretary of Defense have a decision to make about arming military personnel at all times (both on and off base).
Donald Trump: Need I even say more?! Donald Trump has been the topic of either really bad hair jokes or, most recently, the 2016 Presidential Elections. While the man has definitely choked on his words (a few times), he somehow manages to stay strong in the running for the Republican Candidate of choice.
Be it a traumatic event or an inspirational movement, news is constant and is representative of the life we live in our society. While these were just a few tidbits of what has gone on in the world over the last 7 days, I urge everyone to stay connected. I don't care if you have to watch "Live With Kelly & Michael" or download the "E! News" app on your phone. Do it. Stay connected. Educate yourself on what's going on in the world around you. News is not just for old married couples to enjoy over their morning cups of coffee: It's for our generation to engage in and be aware of. We are the next generation that has the power to make our voices heard. So...I challenge us all to engage more. Do not just simply be present. Be involved. Be curious and dig deeper.
