I am not a perfect feminist. I am a woman who believes that all people are equal. I believe that everyone should have safe, affordable access to healthcare. I believe that people should be paid for equal work. I believe women should lift up and encourage other women instead of seeing each other as a competition.
I didn’t get a chance to march the day after the election like I had planned to because my Grammy’s funeral service was the same day. However, I wore a pussy hat in solidarity and cheered all those who marched. Like all things, the march wasn’t perfect. Some signs equated being a woman to having a vagina. I see the signs as reclaiming the vagina, which has historically been treated as inferior, however, the signs are cisnormative and can isolate our trans* brothers and sisters.
Estimates have shown that the Woman’s March had 2.5 to 3 million participants in the United States alone. That’s impressive by itself before you even consider there were marches on every continent including Antarctica. I didn’t know Antarctica was inhabited until I heard this tidbit of information.
I am a woman. I do not support Donald J. Trump. I do not support his cabinet appointments. Quite frankly, his rise to power has made me question our democracy and it’s flaws. I do not support him because policies he and his cabinet are trying to enact are dangerous to women, people of color, immigrants, the LGBTQ community and those in the middle and lower class.
I am scared for the next four years. I am scared that this country will be sent backwards. I am scared that policies put forward will have lasting consequences that can’t or won’t be undone.
