Thoughts on the 67th Emmy Awards Show

Not Emmy-Body Can Win

The 67th prime-time Emmy Awards will take place Sunday night, Sept 20, in Los Angeles, bringing television’s best performers, technicians, and creators together for a night of self-satisfaction and ceremony.

Regarded as the highest award in the television industry, the Emmy represents an individual's career in the eyes of Hollywood. One person's career in television is considered great if they receive an almost 16 inch statue in order to recognize their service to the industry.

The award shows have been hiring comedians for the past few years as hosts, and the Emmys are not one to stop such trend. Andy Samberg is the host of the event this year, expected to make various jokes throughout the evening at whatever comes to his mind.

The Television Academy uses straight-line voting, with nomination lists going out in June 10th and expected back to the accountants by the end of June. In order to get recognized, programming must air on broadcast or cable television with a reach of 51 percent of the national market. Nominees are chosen from entrants who have paid a fee to the academy and met certain guidelines. Nomination is not based off of popularity but rather the amount of viewers the show is able to reach.

There have been predictions since the nomination list came out this past July. Opinion writers across the nation have casted their votes on their personal favorites from each of the lists. These opinions do not infiltrate the actual voting process, though, considering the results for each category have already been chosen by the end of August through the straight line voting process.

American news outlets are in a frenzy during award show season, and the Emmy's prove to be no different. With its usual nominees lined up as candidates along with a few surprise competitors, the Emmy's are the hotspot for Hollywood information in the month of September. Shows like Game of Thrones, Orange is the New Black, Mad Men, House of Cards, and Downton Abbey are all returning to their respective Emmy nominations, with the exception of Orange is the New Black being regarded as a drama series rather than a comedy series. However, there is talk about the actors and actresses who are deserving of the high honor. John Hamm, Amy Poehler, and Viola Davis are only a few of the names that are trending as worthy of their respective titles. Each year, though, there is always talk about the one show or actor that was 'snubbed' from the Emmy, with the general public viewing that the award should have gone to them instead of another.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
