When I first saw a sorority girl wearing the classic tattoo choker necklace to go out, I stopped and stared. There was no themed social that night, and it wasn't being worn "ironically." I just couldn't believe my eyes. This trend had come full-circle, resurrected straight from the era of The Spice Girls!
The '90s are widely believed by this generation to have been the best decade we've ever seen. Between the Disney Channel original movies, young Leonardo DiCaprio, and the insane fashion, I look back at that time with rose-tinted glasses. However, a lot of self-proclaimed 90's kids are actually 90's babies or 00's kids. We barely missed the boat for this decade...is it possible we're making up for it now, on the edge of adulthood?
Crop tops and high waisted shorts moved from the Tumblr girls to the music festival crowd to your neighborhood Urban Outfitters. Boy bands with crazy fandoms (N*Sync and the Backstreet Boys) are hits once again, thanks to the massive popularity of One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer.
When the cast from a popular sitcom such as Friends or Full House reunites, it becomes front page news (AKA it is all over your Twitter feed). April Fool's Day hoaxes probably convinced you that Space Jam was somehow making a sequel (SIKE). On the internet, it's impossible to go five seconds without a '90s mash-up playlist or cast reunion announcement flying at your face unless you're living under a rock.
This nostalgia is powerful. For example, there are countless Facebook fan pages, with millions of fans, for early Nickelodeon programming. The demand was so great for retro shows that TeenNick will be dusting off old favorites like The Amanda Show and Rugrats for a new programming block coming this fall. The title? "The '90s Are All That."
I can't help but get the feeling of deja vu.
Or, as Regina George would most likely say, "Stop trying to make the '90s happen!"
With our age group, mostly twenty-something college students, living a carefree life while growing up in the '90s seems like a good place to be compared to studying for finals. It was a simpler, happier time. Our only concern was getting home from school in time to watch Boy Meets World. It's only natural that we want to celebrate that part of our lives, and pay our respects through fashion, music, or Girl Meets World.
