We all know someone who finds a negative in the most positive situation. They're no fun to be around, and they make you feel guilty for being happy and positive around them.
If you know a Debby Downer, it can be hard to spend long periods of time around them and even harder to find something to talk about with them. Happy and positive thoughts make some Debby Downers cringe, and it becomes extremely difficult to feel happy when you're with them--which makes for an awkward friendship or relationship if you ask me.
I used to be a little bit of a Debby Downer myself until I realized nobody really enjoyed being around me. My friends felt guilty for having fun around me, so they stopped hanging out with me. My family stopped listening to what I had to say and I found myself feeling pretty lonely. So, what I learned from that is that relationships are all about how you make other people feel when they are around you.
If you make people feel good, you'll have no problem making and keeping friends, but if not, your social life could be challenging. People are drawn to other people who make them happy and who make them feel confident. Nobody enjoys spending time with someone who never has anything good to say or who always complains.
So to all the Debby Downers - you might consider changing your habits and training your brain to think positively. Doing so could spark more activity in your social life and bring about some very exciting changes.
And to all those who know a Debby Downer - don't feel guilty for abandoning their friendship. They will figure it out eventually. Continue surrounding yourself with happy, positive people and you too will be happy and positive.
Nobody likes a Debby Downer.
Be a Peppy Patty instead.
