No More Selfies

It has recently been brought to my attention that Alabama sororities are banning “selfies” on social media because of the immature and childish representation of their chapter that it portrays. Some may say that this is over the top and invading these sorority girls’ privacies, but I disagree… IT’S AWESOME!!

There is only one place for a selfie, and that is snapchat… because it never happened. If you haven’t figured it out yet, this is going to be a rant. Deal with it.

Selfies: What possible reason do you have for posting a picture of yourself, taken by yourself, on social media for all to see? Pride, self-confidence issues, vanity? The way I see it, all motives for selfies are sins, and therefore, a selfie is a sin… probably one of the worst.

Mondays and Wednesdays: stop Stop STOP!! I don’t give a crap what unrealistic celebrity has a great body or whatever else you decide is going to be your “Man Crush Monday." I thought all of this ogling and fangirling garbage would disappear once we quit doting on Zac Efron from High School Musical, but apparently not. Also, DO NOT post a picture of your significant other. I’m happy for you… I really am… but NO ONE CARES! Unless you happen to have been in one of those perfect long term relationships that ended in a death or someone going off to war, don’t post it. I’m serious, girls… this is what group texts are for.

Food: I’ll admit it. I have a tendency of snapchatting a lot of food… but at least they disappear anytime between 10 seconds and 24 hours. (Unbeknownst to most, I have an underlying passion for cooking and am usually quite proud of my creations). I’m somewhat of a hypocrite, but is it really necessary to post a picture of your third XL Cheesy bread this week with the caption, “OMG, I’m soooooo fat, but it’s soooooo good” on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter? If you want a mental image of college for a girl, imagine her in yoga pants on a stair climber while watching The Bachelor with a water bottle full of Smirnoff and a Chipotle burrito sitting on the table next to her. Oh, and some Lily… and Starbucks.

I got my content for this article simply by scrolling down my social media feeds and reading all the generic information that sorority girls post. I know you guys have stereotypes that you have to live up to… but you can stop any time… or let your sorority put by-laws in place to END THIS once and for all.

Okay, my rant is over.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
