Being Car-less In College Isn't That Bad, Quit Being Dramatic

Life is harder when you don't have a car.

Being Car-less In College Isn't That Bad, Quit Being Dramatic

Ever since I have been down here in Lexington as a student at UK, I have been without the thing some, if not most, of my peers have - a car.

I have been in Lexington for two years, and there have been times where not having a car genuinely made my life harder than it had to be. Fortunately, I live in a city with alternative transportation options like buses and ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft. I also ask my friends for rides a lot, too. But there comes a time where I have guilt and sympathy for my friends sacrificing their time and gas to take me places. I wish I could relieve them of my burden, but I can't right now.

The first con about not having a car is not being able to drive myself to church. I want so desperately to repay what my friends selflessly have done for me over these two years. I want to be able to drive others like me who are careless to God's house and other places they need to go.

The second con about not having a car is being unable to go places where I need to for school.

In the past, one of my classes met up in city hall. Instead of being able to drive there, I walked a very long way over to city hall. It sucked because it was a long way and it also was cold as heck that day. If I had a car, I could have been over there in minutes.

The third con about not having a car is packing up and going home more often. My momma and my nieces have had to go months without seeing me because I have no way to get to them. Missing important milestones in my nieces' lives are what devastates me the most.

Several other cons about being car-less are not being able to go grab groceries on my own and to go places I want to go, like taking myself out for dinner. It would be more convenient to have a car after I get out of work and all I want to do is go home. Right now, to get home from work means an Uber ride.

But even though this article sounds like one big complaint letter, I am thankful for the bills I don't have to pay when one has a car, like insurance, gas, upkeep costs and registration fees every year.

Until I am able to get a car, I will ride these buses and ride in these Ubers with no shame.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
