No, America is not doomed.
This article is not meant to complain. Nor to bash, insult, or berate anyone or anything.
This election, to a lot of people, was a shocker. It elicited a resounding response, out of all types. Trump supporters, Anti-Trump people, even people who didn't particularly affiliate with any one party. I was one of those people. I stayed up all night. I cried about it. I yelled about it. I ranted about it on social media. I spent a lot of time brooding over it and being angry. I commiserated with my boyfriend, the one with whom I share my deepest, darkest thoughts, for hours on end.
The morning after, he told me he was at peace. I was so aggravated with him. How could he come to peace with such a horrible thing so quickly?! Did he not understand the consequences this could bring? I underestimated my sweetheart, because, truthfully, he did. But he made a conscious decision to not let it overwhelm him. And that was a continuous trend as the day after the election went on. My women friends, my people of color friends, my LGBTQIA friends, all telling me the same kinds of things.
We aren't doomed.
It's not that our government couldn't use some work. That the system isn't a little faulty as it is. But it is because simply...we are America.
Do you know what a feat it was that we even won the Revolutionary War in the first place? Think of all the problems we've faced in the past, as a nation. Are we still here, or are we not?
Our country is divided right now. I will not deny that. But we need to find a way to reunite ourselves. This will only set us back if we let it. The president is not the end all be all of our lives. Part of what makes this country amazing is that we the people still have some power. It is easy to feel like we are powerless. I feel powerless a lot of the time. But our voices mean something, and I am going to hold onto that belief until the day I die.
So what can we do for the time being? Love each other. Hold each other as tight as you can. Be kind to one another. We are a country divided right now, and it's gonna take a while for us to come together. Some may argue that we never really came together. Maybe not as an entire country, no. But I've seen us come together. Even if it was just in the little corners, in the dark crevices, out of sight. Some of our togetherness has been shown right in plain light. Let's find a way to spread that togetherness. It has done a lot of good for us in the past.
No, America is not doomed. Because we the people will not be defeated.
