The NFL is 100 years old. That is right, one of the most popular televised sports has now been played for a century. There have been countless games that have shaped the league. Some of these games have resulted in miracle wins that shook the NFL landscape and the playoff picture at the time.
One such game is called the Minnesota Miracle Game. The Minnesota Vikings led by quarterback Case Keenum were trailing twenty-three to twenty-four. There were only ten seconds left in the game. They were on their own thirty-nine-yard line needing a miracle. The NFL world went crazy for what happened next, the Vikings lined up in a three-receiver set. Which means they had two wide receivers on the right side of the quarterback and one on the left.
Case Keenum dropped back to pass and threw the ball downfield to his man. Stefon Diggs was the receiver who reeled in the catch. The reason why it is called the Minnesota Miracle is that while all this is happening it was third down. There second to last chance to run a play to win. They needed sixty-one yards. As the time expired Diggs caught the ball and due to a Saints safety missing the tackle he broke free down the sideline for the game-winning touchdown.
Words can not truly describe what happened in the game. This game was also very important in establishing a new rule for the league. Once Stefon won the game the rules dictated that an extra point must be kicked. The problem was there was no time left on the clock confetti was blasting everywhere and the Vikings team swarmed the field in victory.
The NFL had to get players from the Saint locker room after being heartbroken in this defeat to play an extra snap for a meaningless point. The players were clearly upset about this so the NFL put in a new rule the following season. A walk-off touchdown that results in a victory where the extra point is not needed, the kick will not be attempted.
The NFL made this memory that will stick in fans minds for years. It was an amazing play and the game even required a future rule change. What is coming next could be even more special.
