“Funny the way it is if you think about it, somebody’s going hungry someone else is eating out…Funny the way it is, if you think about it, one kid walks ten miles to school, another’s dropping out. Funny the way it is, not right or wrong, a soldier’s last breath his baby’s being born.” - Dave Matthews Band
Dave Matthews words put everything into perspective for me. Over Thanksgiving break I traveled to New York City-good and bad, I was exposed to a lot. By a lot I mean people who live on the top floor of the Plaza to people who live on the streets in need of a home. I was shown both ends of the spectrum on this trip and I still am not sure if I am grateful or sad. Grateful that I have shelter, food, and family, or sad for the people in need of homes. On this trip we visited St. Patrick’s Cathedral and as I sat on the church pew all I could think was, “Funny the way it is.” I looked around and witnessed people on their knees with their hands clenched praying for dear life. I also witnessed people mindlessly walking around on their cellphones taking pictures. Granted they could be taking pictures to remember a place that they just received powerful word from God in, still I found it funny but also a bit sad. As I scanned the room thoughts flooded my mind. What were their personal lives like? Are they happy or sad? Can I do anything to help? Obviously I was not getting answers to any of my questions so I merely sat and observed. It was rather odd, no one knew anything about the person next to them. I didn't know if the person two feet away from me was religious or if he/she had come to this sanctuary in search of purpose or an answer. I was clueless. And for that I am not sure if I was appreciative or sorrowful. However, one thing this experience taught me-everyone needs prayer. We as humans need to take a step back from this fast paced life, look around this Earth and pray. I pray that everyone in that cathedral found peace in whatever they were experiencing that day, as I do for all of you everyday. Let us all come together, no matter the age, color, or gender... and pray. And if not religious-let us keep each other in our thoughts because everyone is fighting a strenuous battle of some sort.
