Right now, I stand in front of you (not technically, but just go with it…) to admit that I have a problem. Now, before you get all worried and start freaking out, you too probably have the same condition I have. It’s called “I-make-New-Years-resolutions-and-go-through-with-them-for-two-days-and-quit-itis”.
I know. Its intense. But it has lasting effects and it's time we find a cure. The idea behind New Years resolutions is to make yourself better. Why else would the saying “New Year, New Me.” exist? (Gag.)
Over the years, I have had the same New Years resolutions: lose weight, eat healthier, be nicer, do better in school, etc. Of course, this year I want to accomplish those things, but I have added a few more that I know will for sure lead me to be the Madison that is intended for 2016.
1. Be joyful.
There is nothing worse than being a walking ball of cranky. A life full of blessings is something to be happy about, and I am determined to make sure that my happiness is contagious.
2. Love Jesus more.
With all of the craziness going on, I have unintentionally not given Jesus the attention he deserves. I regrettably admit that, but I know that will not be the same this next year. He thought that I was worth dying for, and I know for a fact that he is worth living my life for.
3. Trust faithfully.
I am guilty of wanting to control life in my two tiny hands — a side-effect of being human, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay, nor should it be a focus. I want to wholeheartedly trust that God has a plan for my life and faithfully pursue whatever he puts in my path.
4. Study. Study. Study.
I have been given the most amazing opportunity to study at the university of my dreams, and I have had such a successful time there, thus far. I want to make sure that Future Me is proud of what Past Me has done. Keeping grades up, studying my heart out, graduating with honors, and starting a master’s degree are all in my plan for the next year and a half, and I want to make sure all of that happens.
5. Give out grace, freely.
I am not a patient person, so this is a hard one for me. I have to work daily, and even by the minute, on not going crazy in any situation that requires patience and grace to be given. I know that it will take time, but it will be so worth it in the end.
6. Be open to new things.
Whatever it may be, I just want to have fun trying out the new things life throws in front of me. The new journey ahead is one that I am really looking forward to, and why would I ruin it for myself by not wanting to step out of my comfort zone?
With all of that put out in the open, I want every one of you to keep me accountable to these things, and I want to challenge you to take responsibility for carrying out whatever resolutions you make for your new life in the upcoming year. Don’t let the resolutions be words that you say, live them out and let them lead to a revolution of yourself and the world around you.
Peace and blessings, my fellow humans. I hope your new year is filled with joy and love.
