New School Year's Resolution

Kind of like a New Year's Resolution, but more fun.

New School Year's Resolution

Starting off a new school year is refreshing, and a good time to reset many of your goals, similar to a New Year's Resolution. If you're anything like me, your mindset may vary with each new semester. Some years, I'm all about school, and sometimes partying becomes a main priority.

This year, I thought I'd make a realistic bucket list/resolution of all the things I'm going to do - and not do - this upcoming school year.

  • Am going to drink healthier, and by healthier I mean avoiding sugary mixers
  • Not going to tell myself that Tequila has the same nutrients as water
  • Am going to go out even when everything is telling me to stay in
  • Not going to binge eat at 2 a.m. coming home from the bars (hopefully)
  • Am going to wakeup at 5 a.m. for 7 a.m. tailgates
  • Not going to sleep in through my 3-day-a-week 8 a.m. class
  • Am going to nap a whole lot more
  • Not going to strive for a 4.0, because let's be honest, does anyone care how Amy Schumer did in school? (Yes, I'm comparing myself to Amy Schumer)
  • Am going to make an effort to have a social circle outside of Greek life
  • Not going to make excuses to avoid going to the gym
  • Am going to make excuses to treat myself to the new ice cream shop on Grand River, after the gym
  • Not going to wait until the last second to write excessive papers
  • Am going to put more time into extracurricular activities (like my sorority functions, internship and The Odyssey)
  • Not going to get to the point of intoxication where I need my roommate to hold my hair back, while I let out everything I ate that day, plus some
  • Am going to seek out more clubs, organizations, opportunities just for fun and the chance to meet different people on campus
  • Last, not going to let this year go by without making endless memories that I can look back on and say, “Damn, that was a good year”

So this year, create your own New School Year’s Resolution, a realistic one, and see where it takes you. Each year is a chance to do something you haven’t done before. Get out of your comfort zone and make college what it’s supposed to be: a place to find yourself, accomplish what you never thought you could and have loads of fun.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
