This week I had the opportunity to travel to New Orleans, Louisiana on a school trip for a few days, and in my short time there I learned a lot about this gem of a city and some of the neat things it has to offer. Although it may not be the ideal vacation destination for the family, it's definitely a nice place to check out on a short getaway. While the humidity is constantly high and it may not be the cleanest of cities, New Orleans is a place that you won't soon forget after you visit. This city is full of surprises and you never know what you may see.
One of the best aspects of the city is, without a doubt, the zesty cajun food. I mean, did you really get a taste of New Orleans if you didn't try some gumbo or fried alligator? There's so many restaurants and cafes to choose from, you'll never run out of options. After you eat, be sure to grab some warm, sugary beignets and cup of Cafe Au Lait from the famous Cafe Du Monde.
New Orleans is considered the birthplace of jazz, and you're guaranteed to hear just that while you're there. The bands you'll find performing throughout the streets of NOLA have their own unique style that just about anyone will love. No matter what time of day it is, you'll probably hear music coming from somewhere around you.
The French Market is full of local food vendors and craftsmen. Take a walk through the open air market and you'll find anything from jewelry to voodoo dolls to fresh pralines. On a hot day, grab a sno-ball to cool you off and quench your thirst.
The cemeteries in New Orleans are a sight to behold, with most of the graves being above ground. Many of them are elaborate with unique shapes and sizes. Whether you're exploring on your own or taking a ghost tour, the cemeteries are a must-see.
The bold architecture throughout the city is just as fun to look at, and it's a great way to dig into the rich history of NOLA. If you have some time to spare, take a walk, bike ride or even a carriage ride through the streets to get more acquainted to the cityOf course a trip to the Big Easy isn't complete without a walk down Bourbon Street. You're sure to see something interesting while you're there. Whether you're in the mood to hear some local jazz music or just sit back and do some people-watching, Bourbon Street is always the happening place.New Orleans is a city full of brightly-spirited people and a special culture that just doesn't compare to anywhere else. It's a place where the music's a little louder and the food's a little spicier. No matter who you are or where you come from, the 504 is likely to have something for you to enjoy.
