Let’s be honest this Presidential Election has been an absolute nightmare for pretty much everyone involved. It doesn’t matter what side of the coin you fell on this past Tuesday night, I think we can all agree that the fallout of this election is far from over. Today at school I sat at lunch with several of my friends, before anyone could say anything one of my friends said in a voice that was much more suited for the outdoors “We are not gonna talk about politics, okay!"
My immediate response was “do you think pretending nothing actually happened will solve our problems because it won’t." Later that day I logged onto my Facebook account to see the horrifying news that hundreds of thousands of college students had already begun protesting the election results. Watching thousands of millennials stand outside the White House screaming ‘Fuck Trump” was absolutely horrifying.
I realize that everyone is shaken up about this, but this our faults, whether you want to admit it or not, this country and the way we promote the popular culture is the reason why a former reality T.V. star was elected president. And just as bad our lack of accountability to the people we allow to be in positions of power just shows how corrupt the system is. Trump Won the election for two reasons, reason #1 he represented the Entertainment factor that exists within our popular culture. We as a culture are more interested with being entertained than choosing someone who can govern us properly, so instead of blaming the system why don’t we blame the people who allow the system to exist the way it does, us. Reason #2, we have as a culture made a habit of letting people get away with crimes because of celebrity status, now we have chosen to let that very same thing carry over to our politicians. People who commit crimes of national security should not be able to run for president and yet we allow them to do it anyway, because the system is incapable of change unless we as one nation fight to change it as a single united front. Trump won this election because he was running against a criminal. That in itself never should have happened, but the popular culture and the people who allow it to exist are the reason she was on the ballot.
Donald Trump is president, you may not like it but that’s just where we are at this current moment in our nation’s history. Instead of marching on the White House, burning flags and screaming profanities at the new president of the United States. We should instead make the commitment to come together as one people, one nation, one community and despite our differences and work together. That’s how you affect change, that’s how you make a difference. If you think marching around rioting and burning flags will change anything, then I have some bad news, you are just responding in the way the Mass Culture we are a part of has conditioned us to act. If the culture is the problem, then acting the way the culture expects and has conditioned us to act won’t change anything.
I’m not asking you to all be united in what you believe but I’m asking you to be united in love, the love of your country and the love of your fellow man because that is how we will really make America Great!
