I Never Expected Greek Life To Be For Me

I had no idea the impact a sorority would have on me!

A sorority was never in my plans whenever I discussed college with my friends and family. “No way am I paying for my friends!” I would say when people asked if I were going Greek. Growing up with two older brothers definitely did not mold me into a girly-girl, therefore I thought I had no chance of fitting in with the girls covered in sparkles. I went into college stubborn and set in my ways that Greek life was not for me

However, I was SO wrong.

The time for sorority rush was quickly approaching and I decided to give it a shot. My mother told me “Try it and if you completely hate it, drop”. What did I have to lose? Little did I know, I had nothing to lose but so much to gain. Going Greek has been one of the best choices I have made in college so far. It has given me so much that I never saw coming.

I have met some of the most genuine girls through my sorority. For example, the girls in my sorority family have become like real family to me. Believe it or not, I do not run around yelling “OH MY GOODNESS BIGGIE/GBIGGIE,” at them whenever I spot them on campus. But they are like big sisters to me. They are always there for me no matter what. Whether its bringing me popsicles after hard exams, listening to me complain about boys, or reassuring me that it’s ok to wear a t-shirt for the 3rd day in a row, they are always my go to people.

I also had the presumption that living with 50 other sorority girls would be a less than ideal situation. Now, I could not imagine it any other way. Whenever I need a cute top to match my jeans or someone to grab coffee with me, I have a row of doors to knock on. Living with my sisters has also given me a wonderful roommate. She takes on the roles of my best friend, mother and partner in crime. She can make the smallest activities fun, such as a trip to the market where we find each other dancing in the isles to whatever is song is playing. Basically, I feel bad for the people not surrounded by their best friends 24/7.

While most people (including myself at first) see being Greek as an excuse to go out all the time, it is much more than that. We have a reputation to uphold academically. With about 200 girls in the chapter, it is very likely someone else will be taking the same course or have previously taken it. It is easy to find a study buddy or someone with notes to borrow. I have never met people with more drive than these girls.

Now, these are just a FEW of the things I have gained as a member of the Greek community. I could go on forever about the benefits. I have a found a home that accepts me as I am, bad hair days and all. It is an amazing feeling to be apart of something bigger than just myself. Once again, going Greek has been a great choice and I hope everyone gives it a chance even if you think you’ll never fit in! Take it from a person who thought Greek life was the most absurd idea ever, GREEK LIFE CAN BE FOR YOU!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
