I've never been one to "Netflix and chill." While I have had a subscription to the company for almost two years now, I just have always found myself too busy to actually sit down and binge watch shows - even the best of them. All my friends said "Breaking Bad "was the best thing ever on TV. So I started binge watching it earlier this year, and found myself watching about six episodes a week, taking a few months off, and then watching another six more. Case in point, I only got to season four and never finished the series (which I plan to eventually). I don't know what it was, perhaps that I felt the plot pace was way too slow, but I was never really hooked. However, I have recently come across some new shows that have finally hooked me on Netflix. I wanted to make a short list of series for everyone to check out while looking for a new show to watch. I would say the list consists of shows that would most interest people in a similar age group as myself (in their 20s), but anyone older than that should still at least give all these shows a shot, which I think can appeal to anyone my age or older. I've narrowed it down to only two shows, and I did so because I so strongly believe that you will enjoy both of them. And because, let's be honest, no one has time to binge watch five shows before summer's end. Okay, maybe that doesn't apply to everyone...
1. "Stranger Things"
You've probably heard a thing or two about this new Netflix original series. Season one has only been available for a month and the hype is already crazy. Critics have been raving about the series, with the show receiving praise and solid reviews almost everywhere. The show follows a mother, Joyce (portrayed brilliantly by Winona Ryder), whose 12-year-old son Will goes missing one night after being taken by some sort of strange creature. A few different searches are initiated throughout the town for Will, and all of a sudden the whole community seems affected by the event that has taken place. There's so many factors that make this a fantastic watch. The cinematography is so interesting and unique, with interesting shots every scene that keep you questioning why you are looking at what you are looking at. The directing by the Duffer brothers is spot on, reminding you of many shows/films from the 80's that the series is inspired by. And the plot is extremely creative, exploring a simple yet complex idea that really has never been presented on television ever before. I'm not a fan of kid actors, but the kids who play Will's friends really steal the show. The first season is full of so many emotions. You'll be scared, excited, laugh and on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Be warned, once you start this show, there's no going back.
2. "How To Get Away With Murder"
This shouldn't be any news to you, I'm probably not the first person to suggest this show to you. But this is probably my favorite show on television right now. The show follows a law professor and criminal defense lawyer, Annalise Keating (played by Viola Davis), and the students that she chooses to assist her at her firm. Some SERIOUS drama occurs (maybe a few, dare I say...MURDERS!) that have you questioning the true intentions behind pretty much every single character you have grown to know in the series. Besides the incredible acting, as you can always expect from Davis, as well as from all the major roles in the show, what puts this show at the top for me is how action packed every episode is. While each one is almost an hour long, I was not bored for one minute throughout the entire first two seasons available on Netflix. There is always a major conflict that needs to be resolved, and minor conflicts on the side to bring it all together in the end. Throughout both seasons, you'll be fed more and more information with each episode until you are able to solve the mystery yourself before the characters do. The first scene of season one is possibly my favorite opening scene of a pilot ever. I highly recommend this series to everyone, get watching so you can be ready for season three this fall!
