When I first started watching YouTube, I started watching Bethany Mota and Michelle Phan. Both extremely talented content creators on YouTube, who I continue to watch until this day. The problem though with only watching makeup tutorials by content creators with extremely different skin tones than myself, discouraged me from wearing colors in fear of them being too bright on my dark skin. I was discouraged from wearing colors on my lips and eyes until I started watching makeup tutorials by WOC, or women of color. In other words, women who looked me. Jackie Aina and Destiny Godly showed me how to wear any color that my heart desires. I'm going to share with you, my five favorite WOC friendly makeup tutorials.
1. Jackie Aina
She is one of my favorite you-tubers of all time. I refer to her as my best friend in my head. Jackie has a beautiful personality and her tutorials are both entertaining and informative. Jackie Aina is part of the reason I learned to love my dark skin.
2. Alissa Ashley
HER VIDEOS ARE PERFECTION. The quality of her videos makes me want to cry, because they're so great. She's another beauty you-tuber who is both entertaining and informative. The best part about this particular video is that all the products are black owned. It is important to make sure you support small businesses especially black owned business. The money earned can be used to re-invest back into the black community to help better it. You can support the black community while looking cute doing it.
3. Farah Dhukai
Farah is another favorite of mine. She is super sweet and her cultural looks are beautiful. Here she teaches you how to get Rihanna's ANTI look.
4. Destiny Godley
Destiny Godley is the mother of bright colors on dark skin. Her and Jackie really inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and wear bright colors. She's a professional makeup artist so you will learn how to properly beat that face.
5. Bronzed Fawn (Me)
So this is my shameless plug, don't judge me. After being inspired by the ladies above, I decided to create videos. I hope that I will empower other women of color to step out of their comfort zone and wear the colors they want to wear.
Watch everyone on YouTube, but just be mindful to not only watch one kind of person. YouTube is full of so much diversity, and it's nice to watch makeup tutorials by women who look like you. As well as women who don't look like you.
