My Top 5 Pet Peeves

Get to know me better by finding out what really gets under my skin.

I, like most people, get annoyed by a lot of things that people do like: when people talk way to loudly on their phone on the metro, when there is a really long line and only one register open at a store, people who walk out of a bathroom without washing their hands, etc. But like everyone, some things get to me more than others. So here is my list of my top five biggest pet peeves (yes this will get political).

1. People who assume I am a Christian because apparently everyone believes in Christ

I just find this annoying when people assume I am a Christian all the time. Usually asking me about church or when I got confirmed. Then when I tell someone I am an atheist they act shocked (also half the reason atheists talk about being an atheist is because they have to clarify so much) as if someone who does not believe in Jesus is unthinkable. Then they make it worse by trying to convert me or offering to show me Jesus or something like that, it’s just really annoying. In this multiple culture world we live in is it really that shocking that someone does not have the same religion as you? Is it really that shocking and surprising? Because I feel like it shouldn’t be.

2. Tourists

Even when I’m a tourist I get annoyed with tourists. Tourists are just annoying.

3. People who like to tell you that your opinions will change as you get older

Well yes I certainly hope so. That is a fundamental part of growing up is having your view points and feelings of the world evolve. If that did not happen I would forever be stuck at 19, which is fun now, but I would rather not be stuck here forever.

I especially hate this when an older person does it in a political sense. I know many of you have probably gotten something along the lines of “well wait until you pay taxes” or “When you pay bills you will understand”. Well first I have jobs and do pay taxes, secondly I also pay for college which is a pretty big bill. Just something about older people acting like they know better than me or their views are superior and should count for more. Not how it works.

4. People who rich-splain

Richsplaining is like mansplaining but for people from better socioeconomic classes telling people how to live their lives. I have heard people talk about how poor people should just buy healthy food and buying unhealthy is just choosing to be unhealthy. Apparently they have never seen the huge price difference between healthy and unhealthy food or heard of a food desert. Or another favorite I've heard from someone is that people in low income areas should just move. When I tried to explain how expensive actually moving is, housing prices, having to stay relatively close to work or get a new job all he said is “well if someone just wants to be poor”. I get it all the time with people trying explain to me how study abroad is not that expensive and just work more so I can take off a semester. It is just ignorant that other people have a different set of needs other than your own. It is also super arrogant in many instances since generally someone decides they somehow know better for someone then someone living in that situation. It really bothers me.

5. People who stopped playing an instrument in middle school then try to explain music to me

If you do this there is a 100% chance that I hate you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
