My Sorority Experience

One girl's sorority journey to help those deciding whether or not sorority is for them.

My Sorority Experience

During winter break, many young women are deciding whether or not joining a sorority is for them. Thankfully, my school has 4 great Greek organizations, all with different philanthropies and values that make them unique.

As for my experience, I can say joining a sorority was the best thing I ever did for myself. I am a proud sister of the Zeta Tau Alpha fraternity. I was just installed as the chapter's Recording Secretary, after serving as the past semester's music chairman. This organization has not only led me to these leadership positions within the chapter, but joining has made more involved on the campus in general.

This past semester alone, I joined three new organizations, one being Odyssey as a content creator. The other two organizations allow me to be considered a leader on the campus. As a future teacher, this leadership experience will not only look great on resumes, it will allow me to be a better teacher in the long run. As for being involved in other ways on campus, joining sorority has been a great way to give back to the community. Zeta Tau Alpha raises money for Breast Cancer Education and Awareness. This October, we raised about $2,000 for this cause. We also supported the local food pantry by going door to door around town to collect canned goods on Halloween. We support the collegiate sports teams by attending certain events and we support our sisters by showing up to their events in other organizations as well.

While this is all fun to know, I know some of you are asking "but how did you decide which one? How did you know it was best for you to join one in the first place?" First off, my first semester of my freshman year was rough. While I did well in my courses, I wasn't making friends. I was staying in my dorm room every night, even on the weekends. I would avoid going to the cafeteria by myself because I didn't want to sit by myself and I was too shy to branch out and meet new people. A few girls I grew up with back home were in Zeta Tau Alpha and encouraged me to get out and meet them. I didn't have to join the sorority to be friends with them, but after being around the encouraging and friendly group of women, I decided I wanted to be their sister. So to answer your other question abbot deciding which organization; it's all about what feels best. Which group of women will encourage you to do your best but be there for you when you feel at your worst. Which group of women do you feel comfortable calling your sisters?

So for me, in the spring semester of 2015, I became a Zeta Tau Alpha sister. A decision that has changed my life for the better and I would never take that back.

I hope this article helps you decide whether or not joining a sorority is for you!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
