That Moment When You Realize You're Halfway Through College
Kendall Baron

It’s another Sunday morning and I’m still not equipped with the gear to climb out of bed. There are days when climbing Mt. Everest seems like an easier task than climbing out of bed. Yet, I still find a way to fall out of bed. There’s a moment of accomplishment when my foot touches the ground. I’ve won half the battle. Now, just to get out of bed without hurting myself. No, I’m not hungover. No, I’m not high. I’m a college student, which is basically a synonym for the things I previously mentioned, but not quite the same. As I stand tall, having completed the toughest battle of the day, I walk out of my room and into the kitchen area of my suite. From my window, I can see the sun come out from behind Kerwin’s house and office. There’s a sense of relief as I start another day trying not to fail out of American or die trying. People have always told me that I’m smart, but rarely do academics and smarts go together, so I cherish every day that I have the money and scholarships to afford a higher education. Then, it hits me. I’m halfway through college. It’s kind of weird to think about. It seems like just yesterday that I was celebrating the fact that I would be a senior in High School. Today, I’m terrified that I’ll be a junior in college pretty soon. I’m not an adult, but I’m getting close to that age when people start expecting me to act like one. To be honest, I’m not sure I even know where to begin to start acting like an adult. Do you start paying bills or some crap like that? Yeah, I’m good where I am. I’m happy in the moment, at least for now.

When I entered my sophomore year, I didn’t picture this. At the end of my first year, I moved out of my Anderson

dorm with the clear intention of transferring and not coming back. Actually, I almost did. I was this close to enrolling at Kean University and starting over. Something brought me back though. From the late night conversations with roommates to Landmark Festival to finally getting my GPA over 3.0, I can honestly say that it was worth it. If there’s one thing that sophomore year has taught me, it’s to live unapologetically. Live like everyone’s watching and criticizing your faults, but you’re just looking right back at them with middle fingers extended. I don’t know what my head space will be like when I finish my final exam, but I do know that when I finally pack up all of my stuff, I’ll be able to say that I gave it my all...and I’m proud of that.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
