A Letter To My Roommate, My True Other Half

Best friends are the people in life that makes you laugh a little louder, smile a little brighter, and live a little better.

I went into college terrified that I would come out of my freshman year of college with a roommate horror story. A few of my older friends that had already went to college complained about their freshman year roommates and talked to me about how much they fought with their roommate and disagreed with everything they had done that past year. So many people have told me while I was preparing to leave this past August about how hard it is to get long with someone you do not know especially when you are living with them for an extended period of time. This, however, is not the cases when it comes to my roommate, Hayley Rosenhagen. If someone would have told me a year ago that one of my absolute best friends would be from Granger, Indiana (a town I have never even heard of until I met Hayley), I would not have believed them at all. I mean it so much when I say that Hayley is truly a blessing in my life. She is the one who holds me up when all I want to do is fall down. She is the person who tells me that I am beautiful and a "bad bitch" when my self-esteem is nowhere to be found and for that I am forever grateful.

Hayley,

When we first started messaging each other on Instagram after I found you on the Ball State roommate search page, I thought we would not end up clicking like we did. I thought you would end up ditching me like the other people I had talked to in the past had done. After the few days we had talked, I knew we were meant to be roommates. The months leading up to move in day and after numerous amounts of Snapchats and text messages shared between us, I knew that we work out living together just fine. I was so excited to finally be your roommate.

I want to thank you so much for accepting me and making me realize that I am worth so much more than I think I am. Thank you for always being my sidekick whenever I need a partner in crime. Whether it is Sunday night Walmart runs, daily crying sessions over school or boys, our jam sessions at any time, or our Saturday night hangouts in our dorm, you are always there for me right away as soon as I need you. Thank you for being my home away from home and thank you for my other half here in Muncie. I love you with my whole heart and I am so glad I have you as my forever friend.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
