The Time My Parents Came to Visit Me in College

"Your parents are so cool!"

The Time My Parents Came to Visit Me in College

We can all agree, having your parents come to visit you in college is awesome. They take you the nicest restaurants in town, re-stock your fridge and closet, and you get to show off your campus. But, when my parents came to visit me, I had to give them the full College of Charleston experience – and they definitely were not disappointed.

Pretty much every person we encountered that weekend asked me "are those your parents?" The answer is yes. Those two crazy fun people raised me – you'll never wonder again why I am the way I am.

The thing is about my mom is, she only has gotten younger looking with age. She was asked "what year are you?" and "what sorority are you in?" about a dozen times – even by our Uber driver.

My parents LOVE to be my wingman. Seriously though, I met tons of new boys and even girls this weekend through them. I would leave for a minute and come back to them chit-chatting with a random new boy or girl. Then, this random person would turn to me and say, "oh my god, your parents are so cool!"

Taking my parents to the bars on Friday night was a success. Never thought I would see my dad bust a move at Public House – but I guess I should have expected it.

However, taking my mom to the darties on Saturday was unforgettable. Another thing about my mom is, she does not go to a party empty-handed. So, of course, my mom carried around her own bottle of Pinot Grigio. Drinking expensive champagne from a red solo cup – she was thriving.

Girls' darty attire has definitely changed since the 80s -- "I did not get the memo to wear a jean skirt and a crop top." She showed up in her Lilly Pulitzer skirt and it wasn't until someone spilled their drink on her did she understand why girls don't dress up for darties.

It did not take long for my mom to not only learn how to play flip cup but then flawlessly help her team win. Unfortunately, I did not inherit her flip cup skills.

After a few rounds, my mom was not feeling the jungle juice and needed a water-lap. Instantly, some fraternity boys called a pledge over – "get Mrs. Stein some water." My mom had a great time, to say the least.

A weekend full of sharing College of Charleston's fun with my parents was certainly a weekend to remember and I highly recommend taking your parents out on the town the next time they come to visit.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
