Congratulations on clicking on this article. I'm sure it seems like every other post you come across on your Facebook feed has something to do with "why technology is bad" or "why you should give up your cell phone" or "why this generation is so messed up."
So, I can promise you one thing: this article will not tell you why technology is "bad." I, for one, think the number of pros far outweigh the number of cons when it comes to cell phones, laptops and best of all, Spotify music.
But, when used the wrong way, technology can be a distraction. That's the reason that, one day over winter break, my dad declared a one-day technology fast for all four of my family members.
Disclaimer: we were in a little condo near the beach on a short weekend getaway that didn't have TV anyway. Also, it's easier to put your phone away when you're not awaiting a call from work. I'd love to try this again on a normal day of classes and activities. Still, it was a challenge!
Here are the five biggest lessons I learned the day I went tech-free.
1. Tangible games are so much more fun than phone games.
The feeling of destroying your family in dominoes is more satisfying than I ever thought it'd be. Before learning how to play, I always thought dominoes were just wooden blocks you lined up to collapse in an extremely satisfying fashion.
But those dots mean something! It's a numbers game! I probably sound really young right now!
You line up the dominoes with the same number of dots and once you're all out, you get to take all of your opponents' dominoes and count up the number of dots. That's your final score, which sometimes can add up to over 50 points. So much better than the "Candy Crush Saga."
2. You can get engrossed in a book.
Now, I'm a big reader anyway, so picking up a book instead of a phone wasn't the hardest thing to do. Still, by page 30 or so, I often find myself worried about what I'm missing in technology land or recalling an embarrassing picture my friend posted on Facebook. Just floating around for the world to see.
But once you've been reading for a solid hour, you are actually in their universe. By dinner time, you're afraid this will happen:
Maybe next year we should do a book ban too.
3. Cooking is fun!
Now is the time you can finally try out all those tasty videos you've drooled over on social media. Cinnamon roll French toast, here you come!
4. You never know what adventures await you.
The night before our technology fast, my family sat around my laptop and binge-watched "Parenthood" (which, by the way, when you're not on your technology fast, you should definitely watch because it's life-changing).
Anyways, without a TV show to distract us, we got this crazy idea to walk to the water's edge of the beach and back to the condo in the nearly freezing weather at 10 o'clock at night. I pretended I was on "Lost" and dared myself to touch the water. Turns out it's warmer than you'd expect.
This little adventure is one that none of us will ever forget.
5. You'll get to hear some really embarrassing family stories.
Your mom may have just been waiting for you to "put that stupid phone down" to finally reveal the tale of why Aunt Mildred has that uncanny fear of vegetables.
Your parents weren't perfect in college. I guarantee they have some funny stories you can get out of them.
At the end of the day, we were extremely proud of ourselves. It was challenging at times, especially when we were bored, but the alternatives I've already mentioned are but a few options. Writing, taking a run or cuddling with your dog for a nap are all viable and very fun alternatives to scrolling through Twitter.
So, you ask, would I do this again? Absolutely.
