I Choose My Majors Based On My Life, Not Society's Expectations
Celine Schell

As I near senior year, I have been setting myself up for success and my future career. I've been networking a lot with family, friends, professors, and future employers. However, the number one question I get is "why major in accounting and marketing?"

I get it. You rarely hear of a student majoring in accounting and marketing. You either hear a student majoring in accounting and finance, or marketing and management. Accounting and marketing are known to be polar opposites in the college realm of business. One uses the left side of your brain while the other uses your right. There are major differences between the two majors, however, they aren't as different as we make them to be.

First of all, accounting can be an extremely difficult major to learn. The major can be difficult, however, because you have to learn more than just your major. You have to learn about finance (bonds, stocks, etc.), you have to learn about management information systems (accounting information systems, big data, etc.), human resource (salaries, wages, and payroll expenses), etc.

Accounting is keeping financial information for a company, and financial information comes from every department. Therefore accountants need to have a basic understanding of every department. Since I am majoring in accounting, it will only benefit me in whatever career(s) I have in my lifetime.

Now when majoring in just marketing I can see how it can be slightly less beneficial. As of now, in my marketing classes, I have not yet learned how to analyze company statements, or how financing works within a company. Marketers need to take extra steps after receiving that degree to understand the effects their projects have on a company. With my accounting degree, I've formed a stronger foundation than that of the core program, yet I've learned all about a marketing career and how the two can tie together.

A lot of times when I meet people and tell them my majors they always assume I'm going into accounting. They say things like "oh you're set for life (financially and job demand)!" or "you'll make a good name for yourself." It honestly can be annoying because although I've chosen my majors based on my strengths, and passions, others seem to tell me which one of the two I'm going to focus on.

I wish people would take the time to get to know why I enjoy both. As young adults, we are just beginning to figure out our lives. It's a time full of major decisions, stress, and figuring out who we are.

All too often society influences us as to what we should major in or the career we want. There are stereotypes built around different majors/careers and then society tries to tell us where we fit best. Society tells us accounting and finance are normal, but accounting and marketing is odd.

It tells us we need to figure out a career path by the time we graduate high school. It tells us that we should go for high-income jobs like medical or finance rather than jobs we immensely enjoy like social work or theater.

It's time to stop listening to society, and make such major decision based on our own unique lives. After some deep reflection I've chosen my majors, and I'm going to choose my careers.

So please, do not tell me what to major in or what my career should be.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
