The election is officially over. It's been one crazy ride right from the start, and even though I'm not happy with the result, I'm glad that it's over. I want our country to move on. There's a lot of fear going around right now, and that fear is validated. But instead of hating trump supporters or complaining too much, I just want to tell you what my hope for this country and every citizen is.
I hope that we will all keep fighting the good fight. Violence will never lead to anything except more violence. We are stronger when we stand together. As I sit here on my beautiful college campus, I'm confused by the fact that this is actually happening. This is what America has voted for. America has chosen to vote hatred, fear, and bigotry. But just because this is what happened, we don't have to allow it to go further on down that road. We have a choice to continue to push and fight for equality and what is right.
I hope you feel lucky for the rights that you have. I am a woman earning a degree. Something many women still dream of. My ancestors fought for my right to vote, and I did it for the first time this election. I have seen a black man be a wonderful president, one that I will miss dearly. I have seen gay marriage legalized. I have had opportunities to travel and experience beautiful cultures other than my own. This is what makes America great. We've come so far, we can't allow that to be erased. I know so many amazing people who are scared and I don't know what to offer them other than a message of hope.
I hope that you can be a light in this darkness. I hope that the message of equality will shine through all the opposition we will most likely face. When it seems you can't hear anything over the hatred, be louder. When you feel hopeless, keep fighting. No one is in this alone.
I hope you'll remain optimistic. For those of you who don't know me well, I'm a very optimistic person. So instead of feeling hopeless right now, I'm choosing to try and see hope and light. I encourage you all to do the same. Be the change you want to see in the world, as cheesy as it sounds. We are all capable of making a difference by standing up for what is right.
Whether you voted Trump or Hillary, I hope you believe in the equal rights of ALL people. Do not allow this man to make you fear others. Please continue to keep that message alive and well.
We are NOT a country of fear. We are a country made of mistakes, but still we inspire. We paved our way through blood and tears. Brave men and women have fought to keep us protected, don't let that be disrespected.
We were created to bring hope. Please, I beg you do not let that message be erased.
Don't give up the fight now. Believe in the power of the people. This is the most important time to be loud, make your voice heard.
And I do hope that despite what I think that Trump will manage to be a good president. It's not like I want bad things to happen to the country that I love. I really hope that in four years Trump supporters will look at me and say "I told you so." It may not seem realistic, but I have to try to believe it's possible.
Most importantly, I hope you will listen. Talk to people of different races, genders, religions, and so on. Learn to appreciate and see the beauty of what makes us unique as people. Don't let these differences created hatred. Learn what others are thinking.
This is my hope for you, my fellow Americans. I want you to continue to believe that there is still hope for us. Don't give up now. I believe in us.
“It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union.” - Susan B. Anthony.
We're going to be okay. Equality will always win.
