An Open Letter to My Future

If you could talk to your future, what would you say?

An Open Letter to My Future

I have no idea what’s going to happen 5 minutes from now, let alone 5 years from now. The future is a scary thing to think about. When you’re a kid, the only things you can think of that are in your future are high school and prom. Once you get into college, you start thinking about the real world. Pretty soon, you’re going to have to get out there into the big bad world, and make you own decisions, your own mistakes, and have your own problems. It’s scary, but also exciting. Don’t you wish you could just shake an eight ball and find out what your future was going to entail? What would you say to your future if you had a chance? I think I know what I’d say…

Dear future,

What’s up? I bet you came around pretty quick, huh? 5 minutes and 5 years seem awfully similar once you’re out of high school. The world came twirling at all of us so quick, that we barely had a chance to breathe before we got into college. When I used to think of you (my future,) I thought of senior prom and freshman college orientation. Now when I think of you, I think of a job, a wedding, a family, and so many other things. It’s hard to think short term anymore, when all everyone tells you to do is “plan for the future.” How in the world am I supposed to do that?

I’m not going to lie, I’m scared of what you have in store for me. Will I be successful? Will I fail first? What kind of job will I end up with? Will I stay in my hometown forever? What can I really do to prepare for all of this? There’s so many questions, and no real answers yet. I love what I do, and I’m excited to move ahead in my career, but I just can’t help but wonder if I’ll be any good at it. I guess I won’t know until you come around though, my future.

What kind of impact will I make on this world? Will I make an impact at all? I can only strive to do my very best, and wait for my future to roll around. I wish that I could slow down time sometimes, though. Can you believe I’m already in college? I feel like just yesterday I was starting middle school. Now, I’m living on my own and studying to start my career. It seems like it’s all happening so fast, and I don’t want to waste a minute of it.

I hope that everything works out the way I had hoped. But, on the other hand, maybe it won’t all work out, and that’s what’s best for me. I’m not sure what will happen, but I know that I have an exciting journey ahead. When I start to worry about my future, I’ll think back to this moment, when I wrote you this letter, and remember how I decided to just try my hardest and leave the rest up to God. If I’m starting to get nervous, that must mean something great is about to happen, right?

Love,

Me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
