My First Time Being Sick in College

Nobody likes being sick. Every other time that I’ve been sick during my life, I’ve been lucky enough to be at home where I can take a long warm bath, my mom can give me medicine, and she can take care of me. To put it mildly, things are different in college.

I got a fever from my roommate a few days ago. I thought that if I just took some Dayquil my problem would be solved. Unfortunately, it only got worse as the week went on. Being sick in college is horrible in itself. But, being a sick college student just before finals has to be the worst. I had to miss the last days of four of my classes. I also was in so much pain that I couldn’t leave my bed for days without my head throbbing.

The next day I went to the doctor because I kept taking medicine but my fever just kept getting worse. The doctor the diagnosed me with bronchitis! It was said that it would be five days before the sickness was completely gone. In other words, I will be sick through my finals. Lucky me!

Just because I found a doctor and some medicine doesn’t mean that I don’t need my mom to take care of me! She and my father were planning on visiting me this weekend anyway, but their visit consisted of her taking care of me. You will never be too old to want your mom to take care of you when you’re not feeling so great.

Being sick in college is hard, but it’s definitely a learning experience. My independence has been successful so far, for I found out the steps that I need to take to fully recover. No one likes to get sick, but it is sadly a fact of life, and a fact of college!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
