My First Semester Of College As Told By Song

With the end of December comes the end of my first semester in college! I was terrified about coming to college, but it has been one of the greatest experiences of my young life! As I reflect on what's happened these past 16 weeks, I thought there would be no better way to share these experiences than through song.

1. Move in day - "A Whole New World" from Aladdin

Honestly, I had never really seen a dorm before. I had never gone to anything that required us to stay anywhere other than a hotel, and I had never had any close friends in college to visit, so move in day was a brand new experience for me.

2. Seeing boys that you haven't been looking at for the past 12 years - "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls

Don't get me wrong, I love the boys back home, but we've all watched each other go through those awkward middle school years, so the dating vibe was lowkey killed for a lot of us. When I got to college, that was a whole different story. There were attractive guys EVERYWHERE. I'm pretty sure they're the reason I don't remember a single piece of information we were given on Welcome Weekend.

3. Getting Homesick - "I Wanna Go Home" by Sandy Cheeks

The homesickness hits everyone at different points. For some it's right after move in, for some it's a couple weeks in when the reality of adulthood hits. For me it seemed to be right after coming back from Thanksgiving Break. All of my classes got hard and the food wasn't my mom's and I just really missed my dog.

4. Being stuck with communal restrooms - "Oh That Smell" by Lynard Skynard

It's an assault on the senses every time I walk in.

5. Going to my first (and only) college party - "Shots" by LMFAO

I wasn't drinking, but it seemed like everyone else had been! Even though I was one of the only people there not drunk, it was still a lot of fun. There was music and dancing and lots of unintelligible drunk singing. It was a really great time!

6. Having a roommate for the first time - "My Life Would Suck Without You" by Kelly Clarkson

In college, everyone wishes they had their own room, but no one wants to pay for it. Living with someone else in a tiny dorm room is tough, especially if you've never roomed with someone before. My roommate and I have driven each other crazy with our opposing sleep schedules and our various times locking each other out, but I can honestly say that I wouldn't want to have anyone else as my first roommate. Shoutout to you, Audrey, for putting up with me, for being a spectacular person, and for always being a true friend.

7. When the fire alarm gets pulled at 2 a.m. - "Hate Everyone" by Say Anything

If you pull the fire alarm in the middle of the night as a prank, you are a sick individual and I hope you fail all of your finals.

8. Finals Week - "The Final Countdown" by Europe

Exams back to back, so much studying to do, and I ran out of Dining Dollars for this semester so I can't even get anything from the Starbucks in the library (which I'm basically living in).... *cries*

9. Finally getting to go home for Christmas Break - "The Dog Days Are Over" by Florence and the Machine

IT'S OVER. The homesickness, the bathrooms, the alarms, the homework, the stress - it's all OVER!!!

Merry Christmas Break, ONU! See you next year!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
