Everyone who meets my dad has the same first impression. "He's so quiet!" To them, it seems true. So, maybe he doesn't talk too much or isn't the best conversation starter. Maybe he doesn't ask 20 questions or talk your ear off in the car. He may not have a story to tell at dinner every night or be quick to respond, but I can tell you something he does do. He loves me more than I will ever understand.
My dad has always been soft-spoken in public. For as long as I can remember, he hasn't been the most outgoing, sociable guy. I make fun of him all the time for standing alone at family gatherings or sitting by himself at parties. It's a joke in my family to point out when my dad is actually socializing or having a conversation in a group of people. My mom gives him crap for mumbling and taking forever to answer her questions. Some people may think he's boring, but I love the fact that he is a man of few words.
It's funny because his dad, my grandfather, is the complete opposite. He is the loud one of the family, always has something to say and never lets the silence linger. There's something about my dad that makes him the listener instead of the talker. That's a gift for me.
What I love about my dad is that he doesn't need to be overly social or be a big chatter for me to know how he feels. He may not spark a conversation with the average joe, but he is always willing to talk to me. He always asks me how my day is and what I've been up to. I can always count on him to check on me. He wants to hear about my accomplishments and loves when I share the good things that go on. I have never had a man in my life care about me as much as my dad. He doesn't have to tell me he's proud of me because I can see it and I can feel it.
I know my dad loves me more than anything in the world. I know he will always have my back no matter what. He makes me laugh, he lets me vent to him, he understands me, he trusts me and I trust him.
If anyone ever says my dad is such a quiet guy, I agree with them. I say, "you're right... he is. But when you get to know him, he is one of the most caring, supportive, loving, most sweet guys I know."
My dad has the biggest heart, even though he doesn't have to biggest mouth. He says what he needs to say when it matters and that's all I need from him.
I'm lucky to have such a great dad. He has shown me every day that he is my biggest fan.
