My Christmas Tradition

Every year Christmas to me is the same. The same magic and color as always. Snow covers the streets and songs fill my car radio speakers. This year, however, instead of singing Let It Snow, we are singing Mele Kalikimaka! The snow decided to take some time off leaving us with the strange 60 degree weather. My family still believes that the despite the lack of snow, this Christmas season was still one to remember.

My family and I celebrate Christmas with some traditions that I have known all my life. On my mom's side of the family we eat Gołąbkis and Ham balls instead of the traditional Ham and Turkey. These family traditions are something I would like to keep in my life forever.

One of my most precious Christmas traditions is the one that I do by myself. Every year at Christmas time I read the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. The first time I read this book was in the eighth grade for a book project. After finishing it, I found that this book was full of amazing characters and warm heartfelt stories of family and adventures. For the past five years I have read this book in the month of December filling my heart with the lives of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March. I also found joy watching the movie Little Women (1994) starring Winona Ryder. Every time I feel upset or in need of some cheering up I watch this movie on my laptop.

This was the year I was most excited to carry on my Little Women Christmas tradition since there was a new movie coming out on Christmas Day. I went to see this movie the night it came out and after just a few days I am still thinking of how amazing it was. This movie got fantastic ratings and I personal believe the casting was spot on. Meg March played by Emma Watson being best known for the Harry Potter franchise. Jo March played by Saoirse Ronan known from another favorite movie of mine: Lady Bird. The scenery and the non chronological order of the story made this movie so beautiful and was a fresh take on this story.

Overall, I recommend this book and both movies to everyone who wants to feel this joy and love between four sisters. Below are some of my favorite quotes.

"I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship."

"I never wanted to go away, and the hard part now is leaving you all. I'm not afraid, but it seems as if I should be homesick for you even in heaven."

"I don't like to doze by the fire. I like adventures, and I'm going to find some."

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
