To My Little Brother

Who is now grown up.

To My Little Brother
Cathey Graff

To my brother, who came to our family when he was just a bundle of dark curly hair and big brown eyes. Who stared at the world around him in wonder of all the new things in his gaze. Who I held in my arms in happiness because I finally had the sibling I always wanted. Who I was ready to watch grow up and share my experiences with.

To my brother, who played dress up with me when I wanted a playmate. Who threw my doll down the stairs because he had a different version of princess fairy tales. Who loved playing with my friends because he liked hanging out with the girls. Who preferred being the villain in our stories since they could do what they wanted. Who we always had so much fun with.

To my brother, who holds the world of music in his hands. Who can pick up any instrument and instantly become a master. Who listens to a piece of music and understands the inner workings of the notes to make it flawless. Who is making the creation and performance of music his life.

To my brother, who became a part of our family the moment he entered the room. Who welcomes our friends in, as well. Who loves each of us even when we get angry or sad. Who we have helped through everything. Who has helped us through everything.

To my brother, who used to be smaller than me. Who I could pick up and carry around the house. Who I thought I could beat in a superhero fight because I was taller. Who outgrew his clothes faster than my mom could buy them. Who went through middle school and high school before I could say "Wishes."

To my brother, who is about to go on college tours. Who is thinking more about his future than who to play as next in Smite. Who is looking to his future. Who writes essays for applications and takes standardized tests for admission.

To my brother, who grew up before my eyes. Who I still believe is shorter than me even when he rests his arm on my head. Who I love with all my heart.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
