Romance in literature has been prevalent for ages dating all the way back to the Medieval times. In the past hundred years, movies have captured our hearts time and time again and pulled the romantic strings in our souls. This is a genre of film that has been sneered at in recent years with critical people forgetting that some of the greatest films of all time are romantic comedies. To be honest, we could use some more good quality, heart-warming romantic films in today’s cinematic culture.
Here is a list of what I’ve labelled my favorite “romantic dramadies” of all time. Keep in mind, this is not including musicals or films that would fall specifically under the “drama” or “comedy” category.
10. "(500) Days of Summer"
This film is one of my favorite rom-coms of recent decade. Coming in just above some of my other favorites like "Hitch," "Juno," and "Crazy, Stupid, Love," Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel bring a real off-beat and spunky quality to this beautifully weaved masterpiece of a film.
9. "The Philadelphia Story"
This spot represents an era of film just before the movie musical took over in the romance department. It sits right up on my list with films like the 1934 Academy Award for Best Picture winner, "It Happened One Night," or Audrey Hepburn’s classics "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "Sabrina," and the incredible "Roman Holiday." Starring Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart in his only Oscar winning performance, and Cary Grant, this film stands the test of time with its wit, charm, and amazing performances.
8. "Silver Linings Playbook"
David O. Russell’s brilliant depiction of mental health seems like an abnormal place to feature a love story, but he does so with such mastery of storytelling that it blew away fans and critics alike. Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro are absolutely stunning in this picture winning J. Law her first Academy Award.
7. "When Harry Met Sally..."
Rob Reiner’s masterpiece tackles the age-old discussion of friendship between men and women. With the hilarious Billy Crystal, the adorable Meg Ryan (who stars in three films on this list), and the music of Harry Connick Jr., this film is charming, funny, and groundbreaking, paving the way for other rom-com treasures in the 90s such as "Pretty Woman," "Jerry Maguire," and "As Good as it Gets."
6. "The Princess Bride"
Reiner’s second flick on my list is one of the most beloved fairy tale adaptations of all time. It’s silly, funny, and is one of the purest love stories you’ll ever hear. All of the characters are unforgettable, and it’s a movie that will live on for generations to come.
5. "Annie Hall"
Woody Allen is one of the masters of witty and off-beat filmmaking. When making this list, I was close to giving this spot to his other romantic masterpiece "Manhattan." However, this was the film that really put Allen on the map. It’s hard to think of another filmmaker who so successfully captures the spirit of New York City on film. His chemistry with the quirky Diane Keaton works perfectly, and his screenwriting is truly remarkable.
4. "You've Got Mail"
One of two Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks flicks, this film is an adaptation of the classic film, "The Show Around the Corner," which is an adaptation of the play "Parfumerie" by Miklós László. It’s the story of two people in an email romance who are unaware that they are also rival store owners. The duo are sure to steal your hearts in this incredible story. Nora Ephron, the film's writer and director, delivers some of the best storytelling I've seen on screen, mirroring one of cinema's greatest historical treasures, Billy Wilder. There will be more to come of Ephron and Wilder on this list.3. "City Lights"
The amazing Charlie Chaplin writes, directs, composes, and stars in this cinematic treasure. It’s the incredible story of his iconic character the Tramp and his love for a blind flower girl. This film also stands the test of time and remains one of the greatest films of all time.
2. "The Apartment"
Billy Wilder is a master screenwriter and director, and his 1960 Best Picture winner is definitive of his outstanding career. Wilder knew how to capture an audience's attention and keep them invested in characters so well. This film is one of the best examples of perfectly executed and timeless storytelling.
1. "Sleepless in Seattle"
My top pick goes to the other Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks film, this incredible story of two strangers on the opposite sides of the country who fall in love without ever meeting. Nora Ephron is the genius director and writer behind this film who also wrote and directed "You've Got Mail" and wrote "When Harry Met Sally..." It’s outstanding that I can talk about the chemistry behind the dynamic Hanks-Ryan duo who are only on screen together for five minutes of the film! Genius.
Well, that’s my list. While there are plenty of other films that I neglected to mention, these are the ones that own a special amount of real estate in my heart.
