Worried about maxing out your 50-pound limit on your flight to school, or can't seem to fit all of your duffle bags into your car? Don't worry, these college must-haves are items you can download right onto your phone--no physical space needed! (And UT has WiFi all over campus!)
1. UT Austin App
It’s your one-stop shop for anything on the 40 acres. This app was a lifesaver when I could not find any of my classes during my first few days of freshman year. It also has a campus directory, list of sporting events and schedules for on-campus bus routes.
2. Hooked
Hungry? Before you go out to eat on The Drag, make sure to check this app! Deals change every few hours and you can save big! Buy one get one free, free chips with a sandwich, large smoothie for the price of a medium--the possibilities are endless.
3. Venmo
This app is a must in college. Venmo serves as a way to make and share payments with friends and serves as a digital wallet. You can create an account and have it linked to your debit or credit card. I don’t carry cash very often and there have been multiple times this year that I owed friends money or vice versa. Venmo served as the means to complete those transactions.
4. CapMetro
If you’re like me and don't have a car on campus, this app will be your new best friend. I’m an avid bus rider and this app allows me to see when the next bus will be coming and at what location. You will never feel stranded again.
5. Favor
Feeling lazy, hungry, and tired? Look no further. Favor allows you to order food from your favorite restaurants and have it delivered right to you. It’s great for midnight cookies in the library, a hot cup of soup when you're sick in bed, or for late-night pizza with your friends in your dorm.
6. CamScanner
CamScanner is great as it allows you to turn your phone into a portable scanner for free! If you need to send important documents home, take pictures of notes you may have missed, or read your textbook on the go, this is the app for you!
7. Uber
This is another great transportation option for Austin students and for any college kid who lives in a big city. An Uber driver will arrive within minutes after a request was placed. Uber definitely lives up to the hype!
8. The Weather Channel
Austin’s weather is very unpredictable. Nonetheless, you are still expected to be present in class no matter if it is raining, snowing or 100 degrees. Be prepared and dress accordingly!
9. The Seven-Minute Workout
Beat the Freshman 15, even if you only have seven minutes. This app is great because I still struggle to fit in time to regularly work out. However, if you can make sure that you are active, even for just a few minutes every day, you will feel a lot better. You will not only notice improvements in your health, but your grades and social life too!
10. Skype
Make sure to say hi to mom and dad every once in a while! They really do miss you. And as much as you may want to be “independent,” there’s nothing wrong with reminding your family how much you care.
