How The Muslim Ban Is Not An Actual Ban

Not a Muslim Ban really.

How The Muslim Ban Is Not An Actual Ban

Recently, President Donald Trump signed an executive order, a temporary travel ban on citizens of 7 Muslim-majority countries. According to The Telegraph, citizens of Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Iraq, along with dual nationals and some green card holders, are not allowed to travel into the United States of America for a period of three months.

The order has also suspended the United States' Syrian Refugee program. Not unsurprisingly, this order has brought up an outrage and backlash, as almost anything in politics does these days. Many, especially those of Democratic or Leftists beliefs, feel very strongly against this order, and have nicknamed it "The Muslim Ban." However, the new title for the executive order is not completely accurate.

For one, the travel ban has nothing to do with those of Muslim faith. While the countries affected by the order are of Muslim majority, it suspends travel for all citizens of those countries, not just Muslims. Out of the top 5 Muslim countries (Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Nigeria), none are included in the travel ban. The order is in place to secure the nation's borders for a period of time, in order to address the issue of Islamic Terrorism.

These countries, according to the Obama Administration, are "countries of concern." The Obama administration actually picked out the countries that would be banned from travel, whereas President Trump signed the executive order.

This is not the first time a travel ban or refugee program suspension has happened in recent history. In fact, in 2011, the Obama Administration suspended the Iraqi Refugee Program for six months, due to the potential threat of history. After the 90 day travel suspension has concluded, refugee admissions will be capped at 50,000 a year-- roughly between that of both the Bush and Obama administrations.

Now that we have the basic facts, let's look at how the nation is responding.

Many argue that this order is against the law or unconstitutional. I was curious myself, so I did some research. According to this article by The National Review, the order is 100% protected under the Constitution. TL; DR-- let me explain. The Constitution states that “the transaction of business with foreign nations is Executive altogether. It belongs then to the head of that department, except as to such portions of it as are specifically submitted to the Senate. Exceptions are to be construed strictly.”

Basically, all foreign affairs, except the approval of treaties, are to be dealt with by the President. Additionally, Federal Immigration Law, Section 1182(f), states that "Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or non-immigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate”.

In plain English, if the president sees a class of people as a potential threat to the nation, he may suspend their entry into the country for a period of time. All in all, the "Muslim Ban" is absolutely under the law of the United States of America.

Protests have been widespread and full of fire since the ban was signed into order. Chants of "No Border! No Nation! F*** Deportation!" and "F*** Trump! F*** Pence! This nation's built on immigrants!" have been heard at airports across the country.

While I support the first amendment that grants us, as U.S. Citizens, free speech, I do not agree with using these protests to be hateful and scream curse words. According to Youtuber Hunter Avallone's video, children are even being brought to these protests. Peaceful protest is okay, being hateful and screaming "F*** the president", is not.

Hollywood celebrities have also spoken out about this issue, most notably The Big Bang Theory actor Simon Helberg and his wife Jocelyn Towne at the Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) Awards. According to Brit + Co., the couple made a statement against the order, with Towne writing "Let Them In" on her chest and Helberg holding a sign that read "Refugees Welcome."

Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau famously tweeted, "To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength ".

Not even two days later, a Mosque in Quebec City was attacked by terrorists. Is this a coincidence? Perhaps. Either way, it is exactly why the temporary travel ban was enacted here in the States, to improve our vetting process and be proactive against terrorism. Protesting, tweeting, and even wishing death upon the President of the United States, who is working to keep us safe.

So, whether you agree with the travel ban or not, realize that it is NOT a Muslim Ban, and is put in place for the safety of The United States. In less than 90 days, immigrants from those 7 countries, along with refugees, will be allowed back in our country safely and with a lower threat of terrorism. Remember that this ban is legal, constitutional, and above all else, necessary.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
