Why I Appreciate Coming Home Now More Than Ever

College may be a "home away from home," but it doesn't quite beat the real deal.

Why I Appreciate Coming Home Now More Than Ever

I think the thing I've finally come to appreciate most about going to college out-of-state is that I have the chance to come home. My freshman year of college I did not want to leave the familiarity of my room at home for the strangeness of a dorm and roommates. My sophomore and junior years of college, I barely came home aside from holiday breaks and occasional doctors appointments. Now, in the middle of senior year, I've been enjoying coming home more than ever.

Things have been stressful, to say the least. I've been steadily avoiding my thesis with the deadline fast approaching, I've been filling out forms for graduation, and I've been thinking about and applying for positions in the "real world" that I'll hopefully be accepted to post-grad. It's been a wild rollercoaster, and I hate rollercoasters.

I think home has always been a solace from school for me. Middle school was, surprise surprise, awful, and I always looked forward to stepping in the door, trying to pet my old dog who didn't like me very much, and laying on the couch and watching TV until my parents came home, and I had to pretend that I had been working on homework. High school was better, but being in my room at home meant being away from the stress and drama that seems built into everyone's high school experiences. Home, as a senior in college, now reminds me I have someplace to go where the experiences of senior year can't follow me. No one at home is pressuring me to finish my thesis (though I'm sure my parents might if I told them I still have 10 pages to write, oops), I don't have to worry about scheduling meetings with professors, I don't have to force myself out of bed to go to classes and because the best should always be saved for last, I have the best dog in the world at home and a pretty OK cat.

Now, whenever I'm on the Megabus, and I see the sign for Exit 14A, I am filled with that special kind of peace that can only come from knowing I am just a small amount of time away from my bed, my dog and my family.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
