Music will always hold a special place in my heart. Since I was a little girl music has always brought a sense of inner peace to me. Music is one of the most healing things that this world has to offer. It is important to cherish it as much as you can.
Many people my age look towards music as an escape from the world. Whether going to a Twenty One Pilots concert or blasting a throwback Britney Spears song, music brings out the most positive side of people.
But, a major reason why music is so important is because the lyrics and the beats speak to us. Many of us not only use music as an escape from the world, but we also music as a way to communicate how we feel, especially those who suffer from mental illness.
Since I was a little girl, my mental health has never been right. I was, officially, clinically diagnosed with generalized anxiety, severe depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder the spring before my freshman year of college. The first thing that I turned to was music, to help me not only heal but to also figure out where to go next.
The only place I have ever felt comfortable is a way too small venue listening to my favorite musician sing songs that I hold dearly to my heart.
Music helps me release any tension that I have during the day. It provides a comfort blanket for me to carry with me throughout the day, as I plug in those headphones. The lyrics and music sing what I cannot say.
Music makes me feel big. This may sound strange, but when I am feeling down, I feel so small. Music makes me feel big.
I want to bring this message out: that it is okay to be in love with a band so much that you make collages of them or listen to whatever top 40 song over and over again to feel better. Music is the one thing that will always be there.
As one of my favorite musician states, “Support music everyday, because there isn’t a day music won’t be there for you." (Hayley Williams of Paramore)
Here are my top five songs to get through a rough time or just great songs to listen to:
Drown by Bring me the Horizon- The lyrics to this song describe how I feel when I am feeling as though I am alone with my mental health. This song is important to me, because it puts into words my feelings.
Cry Baby by Melanie Martinez- This song not has an amazing instrumental, the song also main message is that we all have emotions and get upset but its normal, which is a great reminder to keep calm
Fake You Out by Twenty One Pilots- Twenty one Pilots is one of my favorite bands but this song means so much to me because, this is the song that I leaned toward when I was coming to grips with my mental health.
Escape Route by Paramore- This song represents to me moving on and finally accepting that it's okay to venture out, but also still be scared of the unknown.
My House by Pvris- This is the anthem for this playlist, because this song reminds me that I am in control of myself.
Music creates a comfortable environment for those that feel lost. Music not only helps to shape the type of person that you become, but also communicates who you really are to yourself and the world. Music will always be important, because music helps to communicate who we are behind closed doors.
