On Thursday evening, I took a break from my overwhelming course load and decided to watch a film to unwind. I have to admit, one of my favorite pastimes is watching movies, so I happily gave in to this form of procrastination. The tough part was finding a film to watch, though. I would find this would take some effort on my part. But soon enough, I discovered a film and it happened to be one I had been wanting to see for some time now.
The film is “Two Night Stand,” a modern twist on a love story with – you guessed it – technology, specifically online dating, added into the mix of things. Max Nichols, son of the late legendary filmmaker Mike Nichols (“The Graduate”), made his directorial debut with this romantic comedy, which came out September 2014. It was a lot of fun, and so I am here to introduce this little bit of escapism to you.
The backdrop: New York City during the winter holiday season. Meet Megan (Analeigh Tipton), a young woman in her mid-to-late 20s who decides to give online dating a shot following a recent break-up. She is soon matched with Alec (Miles Teller), and they start conversing online, with Megan initiating the conversation. They agree to meet up that same night, both trying to get over their past relationships, one of which unbeknownst to the other is still enduring. Giving in to the heat of the moment, they decide to hook-up. The next morning, Megan hopes for a quick getaway but is met with the opposite as an ongoing blizzard in the area forces her to stay in Alec’s apartment.
Taking advantage of the time they have together, they decide to get to know each other a little better beyond their online dating profiles. They also share with one another what they may have done differently had they met under different circumstances. There wild night consists of them breaking into one of Alecs' neighbors apartment complex (gasp!) and proceeding to hook-up again, wanting to experience it in a new way without all of the added awkwardness from the previous night.
Without giving too much away, I will stop here and let you see for yourself what comes of the two. Are you tempted to go and watch it now? Yes? No? Maybe so? If you answered yes, I am glad! I thoroughly enjoyed viewing this film for many reasons. I enjoyed watching this film for its originality, it is relevant to this generation because it integrated the concept of online dating into it, making a commentary on our social and cultural behavior and how we have reacted to such innovations, good or bad. I also enjoyed this film because it was quirky in a matter of ways; it was a cute take on a modern love story where social media can lead many people to find their soul mates, where they otherwise might not have without the necessary tools.
