If you have not yet seen this beauty, I pity you. I always thought this show was just a hype from the college theater kids, but I was so wrong. It is truly beautiful and in spirit with revolutionary acts of courage. It is also like a drug trip that you are more than happy to sit and be a part of for more than the hour and forty minutes. While the movie is wonderful and I absolutely love Ewen Mcgregor, we need a remake!
I honestly would love if they did not change the music, but rather added to it when doing a remake. Mostly because it would be a throwback to not only to its predecessor but also to the classic rock music that they original has already embodied. It would be nice for the new songs to embody the current music in either rock or pop, so not only to they blend musically but also generationally. The original also has loves to mess with the volume for dramatic effect. While it is effective, it also makes it hard for the audience to understand the story because the spoken words are often too soft to be heard.
While I love the Moulin Rouge it is somewhat problematic, and I feel that a remake might be able to not only redeem its amazing story. The original is mostly taken from the main man, Christian's egoistical prospective. Christian, while very in love with the leading lady Satine, often puts her in danger for love. We can see this when he asks her to give up being a courtesan, which not only pays her bills but actually will help her towards her life dream. He often undermines her without realizing it when he says that with love because he was a privileged gentleman before moving to France.
I would love for the remake to focus not just on Christian but Satine as well! It would be a wonderful way to include more songs and extend the movie. Satine is often not allowed a voice for symbolic value, but I feel that it would help give her agency within the musical and expand our knowledge of the character.
There are many reasons for a revolutionized Moulin Rouge, but I believe that our generation is ready for this because we are upholding the booming dogma of truth beauty and love. While life might be hard, but I believe we are entering the world where we again believe that the greatest thing is to love and to be loved in return.
