Fall semester is fun; coming back to see all your friends, recruitment and football games. But I love the spring semester. The weather is warming up after winter (which makes it hard to go to class, but we deal with it), baseball games with friends, cute clothes, spring break (of course), and then there is my favorite... Girl Scout Cookie season. Everyone loves their philanthropy. Theta has CASA, Tri Delta has St. Jude's, and Chi O has Make-A-Wish. But I've got to show some pan love here and say how cool is it that Kappa Delta helps the Girl Scouts!?
Everyone seems to have their favorite cookie, and that's nice. However, if you don't like Samoas (or Caramel deLites, whatever) you're just plain wrong. Now, if you are a health nut or you have never looked at the back of a cookie box, I'm sorry for this. Did you know that just two Somoas are 130 calories and 12 grams of sugar? Well, that is what the Girl Scout website says. (www.abcsmartcookies.com) The fact that I can easily sit down and eat an entire box in one sitting is both comical and nauseating. If you can only eat two cookies at a time then, please, tell me your secret.
But those of you who don't eat the Somoas are not allowed to start laughing just yet. The Thin Mint cookies are 160 calories and 11 grams of sugar in four cookies. The Tagalongs/Peanut Butter Patties are 140 calories and eight grams of sugar in two cookies (www.abcsmartcookies.com). They are vegan, so that helps a little, right?
However, I do find it unfortunately ironic that the Girl Scout Cookie season comes only a month or so before spring break. It's like those cute little girls have it out for us. It is safe to say I have a love/hate (mostly love) relationship with the Girl Scouts.
If these numbers really did freak you out, these lovely Girl Scouts do offer a few healthier options. The Shortbread cookies are only 120 calories and four grams of sugar in four cookies. That is only 30 calories per cookie! Also, the Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread cookies only have 130 calories and nine grams of sugar in four cookies (www.abcsmartcookies.com). Again, only 32.5 calories per cookie. Not too bad, guys!
Don't let the numbers scare you though. If you are going to indulge in the cookies, you might as well go with something you love, and my guess is the Gluten Free Chocolate Chip or Shortbread cookie isn't your favorite. If it is, more power to you. These cute Girl Scouts only sell the cookies once a year. So it's fine. Get a box or two then go for a little run. Plus, does any one else find it extremely difficult to turn down the little girls when they ask you to buy the cookies?
